Vic Darchinyan is the undisputed/lineal 115 champion

After several rumors of WBO Super Flyweight champ Fernando Montiel having hard time making the 115 limit, it's almost official that Nonito Donaire, who was to fight the Mexican for the title, will fight Jose Lopez in March for the vacated title instead, and Montiel will look for the 118 WBO title vs. Erik Morel.

Since Montiel hasn't made a defense since May 2008, and since then Vic Darcinyan beat Kirilov and unified the rest of the titles knocking out Mijares, he should now be called the undisputed super flyweight champion of the world, although Montiel hasn't vacated yet.

But that doesn't mean anything, Montiel is not going to fight at 115 anymore, so The Ring should either give the title immidiately to Vic and pick up the linealage from the Mijares fight, or wait until February 7 with that, when Darcinyan fights 'regular' WBA champ Arce. In practice, there will be no other reigning champion left after that fight.

Of course expect Montiel promoter Arum to hold back the vacating of the WBO title so The Ring cannot give their title to the Darchinyan-Arce winner, but then again: it's formality.

Vic Darchinyan is now the true, lineal, undisputed super flyweight champion of the world.

 

Of course, you're right, but the Mijares-Darchinyan winner didn't become lineal and The Ring champ only because Montiel was there in the 2nd spot, and both for the linealage and The Ring belt, no1 and 2 has to meet. But since May 2008, Montiel never returned to 115 and never will, so when Mijares and Vic met, you could say that the no1 and number 2 guy fought each other.

Of course The Ring won't go back in time, and just simply give the title to Vic, although that would be correct IMO. But think like this: as Montiel moves up to BW, Cristian Mijares will take over the no2 rating according to The Ring. Should he beat the same Mijares he just knocked out just because of these rules?

Well, it's their rule book, so I shouldn't argue with that... but it's still stupid... as Montiel is out, the Darchinyan-Arce winner will be called undisputed and lineal champ (since on Feb 7 there will be no other champ left, and Darchinyan is the lineal champ in your book anyway)... but not The Ring champ. Pretty weird.
