AUSTRALIA'S Vic Darchinyan is poised to become one of boxing's busiest world champions as he prepares to move up to bantamweight with titleholders from Asia, Africa and the Americas among his potential opponents. Returning to Australia on Tuesday, Darchinyan confirmed he intended moving up to bantamweight after he retained his WBA, WBC and IBF super flyweight titles with an eleventh round stoppage of Mexican Jorge Arce in Los Angeles. Formerly the IBF and IBO flyweight champion, Darchinyan is bidding to become only the second Australian after Jeff Fenech to win world titles in three divisions. The belt-hungry 33-year-old had no intention of stopping at three weight divisions. "I want to be (champion in) three weight divisions, four, five, I don't want to go to bantamweight and stop," Darchinyan said at Sydney Airport. His win over Arce represented his third world title victory in just six months. Most champions settle for three fights in a year, but Darchinyan will try and squeeze in four bouts before 2010. However doctors have told Darchinyan he cannot box for 60 days after suffering a cut near his right eye in last weekend's contest. Darchinyan's manager Elias Nassar revealed he was looking at matching his charge against either Japan's WBC bantamweight world champion Hozumi Hasegawa (25-2) or Ghana's IBF bantamweight king Joseph Agbeko (26-1).
I don't like his attitude but he has the heart of a champion. You gotta respect him for daring to be great.
Gary Shaw already said he'll never fight Donaire. Darchinyan vs Agbeko would be an amazing fight. Either go for Agbeko or Montiel.
who does. its a damn shame whats not happening for nonito while vics catapulting himself into history.
I like to see a rematch too but as long as vic continues risky path. people should respect him. Montiel, Izzy, and Marquez are more dangerous fights imo.
maybe he was thinking he's not getting any younger, i think he's 33, running out of time..wants to get build his legacy more before losing a step or two..nice move i guess. he cant just sit and wait for the donaire fight to happen because of shaw. so he has build on something before he gets older and while in his prime.
Hasegawa would pick him apart imo, a highly technicaly skilled southpaw with a good size for his division, cant see Vic winning this one, but then again didn't think he'd beat Mijares either, so we'll see but this sounds like a great game plan, i love his attitude, i'll be rooting for him!
Right Hasegawa or Agbenko . . . . . . why never mention a guy named Penaloza? :think :rofl :rofl :rofl
Much respect for him moving up in weight in taking on challenging fights. Though disappointed that he won't be fighting Donaire, I hope he succeeds in improving on his legacy.
vic vs agbeko would be very interesting but he should just wait untill montiel beats morel for the wbo bantem title then move up and fight him instead
