Rounds 4 thru 12 of the first fight between Galindez and Fourie: [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Vf1v0mbNS8[/ame] [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=acw18iltv4E[/ame] [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NlADSf1KXMQ&feature=related[/ame] Fourie went the distance twice with Galindez and also twice with Foster. Pretty good boxer.
Probably about 12 fighters from A minus to A plus grade all came together during the 70's and Fourie was one of them. He is under rated today.
Yes he indeed is underrated today. What an accomplishment going the distance one once but twice with Foster, and twice with Galindez. There was a controversy in that first Foster fight...remember? Before the fight at the weigh in, Fourie said to Foster "Good luck Bobby"...which in his South African accent, sounded like "Good luck BOY"...Foster was sure that's what he said, and made a huge deal of it..even to say that he would punish and torture Fourie in the fight because of it..Fourie insisted that he DID NOT say "boy", but to no avail. Turns out that the South African did rather well in defeat, and was neither punished or ko'ed by Foster, and got Foster's respect, and Foster came to see that Fourie actually did not say "boy"..in fact, foster was most complimentary of Fourie after both his defenses against him, praising him highly, as a matter of fact.
Tho I've not seen a much of either fighter, I've always thought that Fourie was sort of a modern day Maxim. Boxer, not a great walloper, good movement & defense; good chins...my $0.02
Fourie was a fine fighter with a nice loose, relaxed pure boxing approach, just undersized and lacking in firepower against the best. 168 would have been perfect for him.
Good comparison overall, though Maxim was as stiff as a board, where Fourie was very relaxed looking. Finnegan was probably the most like Maxim aesthetically from the 70s light heavies.
Well, that could be my 2 cents as well Jowcol, a very good comparison to Maxim!! Never thought of that, but it works..and a shame that he had to be around in the Foster/Galindez eras..but he had nothing to be ashamed of inasfar as his performances against them is concerned.
