Looks like Ortiz may be back on Sept 6 in Carson, California against Alfonso Gomez. Rafael Marquez may be on the undercard. If it happens I think Gomez is a solid comeback fight for Ortiz. Sept 6 is a Friday so this could end up on ShoBox or one of the latino channels.
Gomez lost to Shawn Porter by fairly wide margins and has been out for almost a year. Ortiz should make easy work at this point.
Actually, surprisingly their rust & schedule of activity dating back a few years is remarkably similar. Since 2010, both fought in spring of 2011 (Ortiz in April, Gomez in May) appeared on the same Star Power PPV that September, both getting knocked out and both in somewhat controversial fashion although both proved to ultimately be mismatches (Ortiz to Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Gomez to Saul Alvarez - the respective headliners of this September's big PPV) Lost a tough fight last summer (Ortiz to Josesito Lopez in June, Gomez to Shawn Porter in July)
Ortiz has been out longer. He is also coming off a devastating loss in which his face got literally mangled. Gomez vs. Porter was also a hard-fought battle and probably took something out of Gomez, but nowhere near as much as Josesito smashing his jaw apart took from Ortiz. Also, the "wide margins" on two judges' cards don't reflect how close that was. It was easily the hardest night of Porter's career besides Julio Diaz (who got robbed).
In the factor of competitiveness of this fight you must first question how highly you regard Shawn Porter to Josesito Lopez. Both are fringe contenders. Thought Porter lost to Diaz but wasn't bad against Gomez or Lo Greco at all. Josesito got the big Ortiz KO, has some upset wins aside, but never really broke past against actual top notch boxers. Still, admirable fearlessness for a modern boxer. Still, Ortiz by late stoppage with some early round trading.
Very good points made. Ortiz shouldn't be tossed in with a top fighter just yet as a trial run surely is much needed. Had Porter-Gomez 97-93, 98-92 type card. Gomez was in each round but never actually in the fight to me. Porter did enough almost every round.
Both guys have certain strengths and weaknesses in terms of when they usually "come on" and sputter out, and it makes for an interesting dynamic as they're more or less separated into phases...(Ortiz is a fast starter who catches his second wind late, having scored a few tenth round knockouts and closing strongly against Berto and Campbell; Gomez usually builds up steam but runs out after several frames) Ortiz could whack him out early in 1 or 2 with a wide power hooking bum rush, or he could take advantage of Gomez fading around the 7th onward as he typically does and deliver the coup d'egras anytime thereafter. Gomez's best chance is by stoppage in the 3rd-6th if he can get to Ortiz during his downtime after (presumably) blowing his load of energy in the early going but prior to him regrouping...or Gomez hitting the wall.
He's going to bring a pot of soil with a little bonsai inside for a chief second. He found he can't relate to any human coach, and there will be no carbon-dioxide emitting bipeds in his corner. When he needs water, he will simply trim off a branch and suckle. If he gets cut, he will chew his master's leaves to create a makeshift balm.
