Gomez always comes to fight, I'm a fan and will still root for him in this one.

Wouldve prefered Ortiz-Guerrero, wonder if they'll put Ghost in a card around this to build. Or will they push a MW-Ortiz rematch?

Don't sleep on Gomez here. The guy has only ever been blown away by one fighter, prime Miguel Cotto, and he came into that fight with a broken hand and off a serious training camp illness that required a hospital stay. Everyone else that has beaten him has had a rough go of it in the process. He's a better boxer in terms of technique than Victor, and he comes to fight every time, throwing a lot of punches, fighting intelligently, and with a lot of heart, a trait that Ortiz has lacked in most of his fights. I think he'll pull the upset, but either way, if the fight isn't competitive at the least I would be surprised.

He got blown away even worse against Canelo when the kid stopped fooling around.

The biggest two names on his resume (Gatti and Castillo) he caught well past their primes when they were fish in a barrel.

He does have the very solid victory over JSK, and one or two others (besides the ones during The Contender over Brinkley and Manfredo). Soundly beating Tackie, although he was near the end of his rope if not as "stick a fork in him" as Gatti or JLC, is a respectable achievement. So too is stopping Jones and Concepcion, to a lesser extent.

He will definitely be game, and can definitely prove dangerous to Ortiz in the mid-rounds...but to lose to him would be a nail in Ortiz's coffin.

It should be expected of Ortiz to take a "tune up."

    Decent enough fight, I suppose...

I'm guessing this would be fought somewhere between 47-54.

Just saw this. Canelo wasn't fooling around. That was the biggest stage of his career at the time. The reason he looked bad is because Canelo is a counterpuncher first and foremost, and when he doesn't have the openings to punch, he doesn't. As the first real decent boxer-type he'd faced, Gomez confused him with good technique, upper body movement, a good jab, and good punch variety. Canelo simply does not do both defense and offense when he doesn't feel like he has the openings to punch. This was demonstrated again against Trout, where he was able to make Trout miss a lot(and Trout wasn't really stepping into punches) but didn't make Trout pay in the process for long stretches. That's why Canelo is going to look awful trying to counterpunch Floyd later this year, he's not going to have the openings and he's hardly a workrate machine when not drained anyway. And if by "blown away even worse" you mean Canelo got the benefit by most accounts of a mega-fast hometown stoppage, sure.

Anyway, also bumping this to say that it looks like at the least this fight is delayed due to Ortiz's Expendables 3 role, if it's not off all together. Ortiz is supposedly going to train for a December fight so we'll see if that's Gomez or someone else.
