Victor Ortiz...Did I see it wrong, Boxrec?

Victor Ortiz VS Marcos Maidana...Boxrec has this to say about that fight: ''Bout stopped by the ringside physician due to a severe cut over Ortiz's right eye. (Ortiz also had swelling under the left eye.) "

    Source: http://boxrec.com/media/index.php?title=Fight:1394027

Does anybody else see something wrong here? What I remember is Ortiz waving the fight off and then the ref called him over to the ringside doctor. I never got on Ortiz for this because it's understandable to me that you can make a judgment call to not risk your future career over one fight. Although ironically, maybe he did in a way. Or, just as understandable, a young fighter getting really hurt like that (for the first time?) second guessing how much he wants to take a fight to the limit. I don't consider prudence some unforgivable sin. It's not likely the path to greatness as a fighter but it's okay if you're just a professional athlete trying to work without getting crippled. Some say he has no heart, is a wimp, etc. I think having been hurt as he was while still swinging before the last KD of the fight shows he's anything but that. But, whatever. That's not the point of the thread.

My point is this looks like revisionist history here. Any editors for Boxrec to fix this or am I actually wrong and it was "officially" the ring doctor?

Watch here: Ortiz shakes his head, ref says "you okay son? Let's go. Come on", he walks Ortiz to the doc and says "I'm gonna stop it, gonna stop it", doc says something and ref waves it off. Ortiz pretty much gave up, but I think technically it was stopped by the ref on the doc's advice, and if I remember correctly, Buffer announced the result so:

Thank you BigBone. Yeah, to me, and maybe this is conspiratorial but it looks like the ref knows he's quitting and hustles him to the doctor because a Golden Boy Promotions guy doesn't need the bad publicity. But that's the official deal, huh. I don't think that's right. Didn't Victor pretty much admit that he stopped it, didn't think he should be getting beaten up like that? Didn't he say something close to that? If he didn't really stop it himself, Max made a speech later about it for nothing.

the kid did the smart thing.
what's annoying is, the focus by so many on the kid, instead of maidona who gave a great performance.
i mean the fight was over. ortiz was overmatched. i know all the critics and comentators preffer for fighters to only follow instructions and let trainers refs and doctors make all their decisions for them. however, that's how boxers can really get hurt poimenant.
it figures critics and comentators hold that bloodthurst when they aren't the ones getting hit.
boxing is a sport where combatants prove who's better by utilising skill and strategy. i saw enough in that fight. anyone who wanted more is looking for tragedy. go read some shakespeare.

Judging by the above video, it seemed as if Ortiz and the doc sort of mutually agreed to stop the fight. Either way, Ortiz was involved in a fierce fight that night, and was recieving ferocious shots.

Peaple shouldn't forget to give credit to Maidana though, as I think one of the reasons which influenced Ortiz's decision to quit, was the freakish nature of his opponent. It must have been very disheartening to knock down a man 3 times, and watch him comeback like absolutely nothing has affected him. It was like he was facing The Hulk, the longer the fight went on, the stronger Maidana seemed to be getting.

Who can blame Team Khan for putting this fight off for the time being.

I'm a little bit surprised you guys commenting are giving Ortiz respect. Really I see him get crapped on so much I thought I was going to catch hell for sticking up for him at all. I'm glad I was wrong.

I was kinda dissappointed to see him quit like that but he jus didn't have the experience to make adjustments to a banger like Maidana. Maidana fought a great fight and it was exciting seeing Ortiz try to bang but you live n learn. Looking forward to his fight tonight

I think they chose maybe just the right opponent. Good enough to mean something and gain experience, but certainly the underdog.

Well Ortiz had the skills to out box maidana. But he tried to bang and knock the guy out, a verteran like Maidana responded well getting up from being knocked down and came back even harder, that really took the fight out of Ortiz. He couldn't take that kind of punishment

He quit. But I have nothing against the guy. His decision, he's the one up there fighting. I just don't know if he's going to change though. His post fight interview was a little shocking (and a little gay... not because he quit, just the way he said it).

The doc stopped the fight, that eye was terrible and the other eye was on the very of being closed shut.

Ortiz did just get rocked as well so it didn't help his case any that he was still hurt while he was being asked if he was alright.

A lesson learned from Ortiz ... I serious thought that Ortiz could overcome this and possible get a UD or a late stoppage in the process ... it reminded me of Cotto vs Torres.
