The first four rounds of the bout, unedited.
It's mostly Sonny patiently waiting for opportunities against a very cautious Rush. It's a subtle look into his technique.

Sonny was so patient he didn't even cut the ring off.

He was cutting the ring off the entire fight. He just wasn't rushing it, because it hard to get set up properly even if you do get on the inside of someone moving the way Rush was. Rush was focusing on pure survival from the start of the bell, using all of his footwork and feinting to not let Sonny tag him.

Obviously, he's not going to score major points fighting that way. Sonny is content letting him deplete his energy, while waiting for the inevitable moment when Rush hunkers down and starts engaging.

Agreed. You could see Liston at one point up the ante and get much more on top of him. He ended up bouncing him off the canvas like a yoyo. Nice footage.

Thanks, I always love backgrounds stuff like this.

"Boxing muddled through the crisis, and in the fall of that year it got what was widely considered a shot in the arm when Jack Hurley announced that he was returning to the sport to make 23-year-old Elmer Rush heavyweight champion of the world.

Hurley was a legendary manager-promoter whose partnership with lightweight Billy “The Fargo Express” Petrolle in the 1930s earned them both ring immortality. He also made Charley Retzlaff a heavyweight contender, famously turned around the career of Harry “Kid” Matthews in the 1950s, and promoted the Floyd Patterson-Pete Radamacher heavyweight title fight in ’57. Then, dismayed by the dearth of malleable ring talent, Hurley became a traveling tub-thumper for the Harlem Globetrotters (and tried to convince Wilt Chamberlain to give boxing a try. “I’ve got too far to fall,” protested the 7’1” hoops star)."

Hopefully boxing or wasn't holding its breath waiting for Jack Hurley to rescue the sport.
Hiss legendary management of The Fargo Express and CHarley Retzlaff the side it's not a good sign when promoting Patterson /Rademacher was one of best and biggest credits .

It appears that Rush went 11-4-2 under Hurley's highly touted tutelage!

No. He was following him until Rush stopped running.

He wouldn't be in the center of the ring the whole time if that were the case.

Rush was moving laterally along the ropes every round. As long as he was doing that, Liston was trying to cut him off. And he was doing so patiently.

Can't say I'm fully surprised given his recent wars of words, but it's a shame, regardless.
