I very much agree with this, cetrainly when it comes to gameplans and dicipline.

    But I do have one addition though;
There comes a time when either of them should let go of the gameplan if it doesn't work out for them at all, or when it's time to put the dot on the i for example.
First Ward. If his gameplan doesn't work and gets behind, or if he even gets hurt on multiple occasions, he might better trow caution in the wind and not try to just make the full 12 and rely on the judges (it's not in Oakland). Better to go out on your shield as being a lamb to the slaughter.
Kovalev. If he doesn't get his shots off, getting countered too much and he seems to be behind on the cards (or even when the fight is close, he is the visiting fighter) he just has to go for broke later on in the fight. Take a few coming in if need be, but just make sure you hit him with something big.
And even when everything would be going his way, he shouldn't keep up the respect too long like he did against Hopkins, but rater let his hands go early to take him out. Against Hopkins he had to much dicipline and only lost it when B-Hop mocked him in the 12th, at which moment he let it rain bombs at the poor old alien, who barely survived.

So gameplans yeah! But not to a fault.

Thanks Robney! I agree that everything goes out the window if the game plans don't work for each guy.

But I honestly don't think Kovalev was giving Hops too much respect. I believe Hopkins was biding his time, going into quasi-survival mode, hoping that Kovalev would tire or make a mistake. It never happened, and Hopkins continued biding his time the entire fight.

I know a lot of people disagree with me and think Kovalev carried Hopkins out of respect for the legend, and only opened up when Hopkins ticked him off. But I sincerely think it's more the case that by the 12th round, Hopkins had to take a chance, as he bided his time to ill effect, with Kovalev neither tiring or making a mistake. When he took the chance, it opened him up, and I think that provided Sergey with the opportunity to then finally unload with better openings.

In any case, if Ward is fighting anything like Hopkins did, it will be a cake walk for Kovalev. Ward is going to need to be much more active offensively.

Kovalev's opponents face a dilemma. He hits so shockingly hard that they have to make a decision.

Do they fight back, try to win and go out on their shield like Cleverly?

Or do they turn into giant sissies and go into survival mode and lose a wide decision like Hopkins or Chilemba?

ive noticed this myself after seeing a highlight reel of his stoppages,if they don't decide quick enough they could end up like that guy who was hit so hard he ended up crawling outside of the ropes/ring.

Compared Kovalev Vs. Chilemba with Ward/Brand................Kovalev looked faster, much more snap on his punches, hits much harder, not so easy to hit, fantastic jab, right hand, left hook, uppercut, you name it. Compare the two fights and see for yourself. Kovalev can knock Ward out, hurt him badly, Ward can't hurt Kovalev, he couldn' even come near hurting Brand who can't fight at all.................Kovalev by knockout!!! Kovalev will have to knock Ward out to get a draw though, the judges will be for Ward..................

I know you've (as an admirer of both men's work) been looking forward to this one for a long time, eh, Rummy?

I think this fight gets pushed back. Ward will have some issue come up. Pacquaio is also scheduled for a November PPV. Hnadwriting is on the wall for Kovalev/Ward getting pushed back.

I watched this a few minutes after you put it up the other night, but I was too tired to comment. Good video and pretty spot on, although personally I don't think Ward going 12 and as essentially a pressure fighter against Brand will help him in the least, I still see that as a fairly pointless fight.

And the point about them being respectful, well throw that out of the window, since you did the video Ward played the race/nationalism card, saying he that EE fighters are basically invaders trying to take what's ours, meanwhile had a white fighter said that about a Asian, Latino, Muslim or African fighter, he'd probably be banned from HBO. After all what Ward is saying is basically the same thing Trump is saying, and he's bashed relentlessly for it.

And not showing up at the presser was the height of disrespect.

I'm not too up on what's happened since. Wasn't it known that Ward wouldn't be attending this prior to the day of the event?

From what little I've read and watched, which included a Kathy Duva interview (I think with Steven Kim) - it kind of looked to me like Duva was trying to sabotage the fight.

Now of course none of us have any idea what's truly going on behind the scenes beyond what is being reported and beyond what representatives from each camp are saying.

But Duva coming out publicly in an attempt to publicly shame RocNation seems counterproductive to the cause. Perhaps it's a set up from both sides to generate buzz. Or perhaps RocNation are being difficult and attempting to renegotiate some terms.

But Duva coming out the way she did is poor form, I think (if it's the latter).

Duva didn't end up looking all that great, but RocNation had a verbal agreement with HBO to hold the fight in Vegas, and now they're trying their best to finagle a way into holding it in Oakland, and while it may be counter productive of Duva, she's calling them out the moment they've started their s***, she's probably just trying to assert herself and tell them she won't be bossed around.

Regardless, I was expecting this kind of garbage but I didn't think it would happen this quickly.

I think a key factor in this fight is Ward switching between orthodox and southpaw. I believe Ward, a natural left hander, sometimes reverts almost instinctively to southpaw and that can be almost as dangerous for him as it is for his opponent.

His trainer, Hunter, says Ward's switching could play mind games with Kovalev. It might but it could also backfire.

As far as venue, I seriously hope they don't hold this important fight in Oakland. That would be a real tragedy.
