He will receive the Keys To The City and will have a day named after him. He will also be the special guest at a Amateur Boxing tourney that day.
Good for him. Well deserved. He put on a tremendous show last night. Rios is one of the shining beacons in boxing today for pure excitement.
flatlander whats the story behind Rios/Ortiz? Who is more popular in Garden City? Do kids in the local gyms look up to them? Never knew there was Mexicans in Kansas lol Let alone a little city called Garden City would produce two of the best young exciting fighters in boxing.
They both started boxing at the P.A.L. Gym, Police Atheletic Club Gym. It was started by ex-Marine and then city policeman Robert Gonzales. Robert was tired of arresting the same juvenile offenders over and over again. So he started the gym over 25 years ago. "To keep the kids off the streets and in the gym" The boxers later change the gym's name to Bad Boyz. There have been over 5000 boxers through the gym since. Both Rios and Ortiz came to the gym at around 7 or 8. Robert left the police force and went to work for the Judicial System as a case worker. Robert Gonzales, Manuel Rios and Bucky Avila all trained Rios and Ortiz at Bad Boyz but Bucky left to train elsewhere and Victor Ortiz shortly after went to train with Avila. Avila died shortly after and Ortiz moved to Denver, CO to live with his sister. Manuel Rios was a trainer at Bad Boyz until just recently. Ortiz is the better known fighter because of his Golden Boy connection. Like or dislike is a bit of a relative term. The general public know and like Ortiz better. Real boxing fans prefer Rios. Both Rios and Ortiz were wild youngsters so they both still have that reputation. All the kids look up to both fighters. Ortiz is the more sociable of the two. Rios is wilder and funnier. Both fighter's families still live here. Finney County and Garden City is one of the fastest growing counties and cities in America. It along with a few other counties have the highest and fastest growing hispanic populations at around 60%.

Victor was born in Garden City and then moved to Denver in his early teens. Brandon was born in Lubbock, Texas but moved to Garden City as a young child. Brandon went to Oxnard, CA after Robert Garcia saw him at the Olympic trials 3 or 4 years ago.
