Looks good. Anybody noticed how Cotto's been throwing his left hooks with the thumb to the side? I'm not sure if he ever threw them like that before. From what I understand hooks with the thumb up carry more strenght, anyone know what are the advantages of throwing it with the thumb to the side?
I've been noticing this as well. Wonder why he and this new trainer would change it up when the left hook has been his money maker for so many years. I bet during the fight he'll be throwing them thumbs-up. He will probably revert back to what he knows and what comes naturally to him. On a different note, I hope Cotto doesn't plan on retreating the entire fight. It'd be in his best interest to box more tactically and avoid the ropes by turning and giving different angles. I think it's also important for him to dig hard to the body a few times every round. He needs to slow Margarito down and make him respect what firepower is coming back.
I know they're just training videos, and they don't really mean much, but this new coach seems to make Cotto work with a little bit more intensity. Anyway, I hope they're not expecting Margarito to come forward in straight lines like they're mimicking there. Gonna' be a loooooooong night. Can't wait.
I hope he doesn't try and thumb Margo :nut I agree about him needing to turn, give angles and definitely go to the body constantly. He'd be better off countering the body when ever he gets the chance.
Thumb to the eye is an interesting theory. Hope that's not what he's going for, although it isn't out of the question that he's thinking "Margarito played dirty against me, I'm going to play dirty with him here."
Diaz appears to be using the Mad Zombie technique where he just walks toward Cotto all determined ala Tonito Margarito.
Maybe this new trainer is an advocate of the Power Line? From my understanding, if I am not mistaken, Jack Dempsey preached having the thumb vertical (pointing toward you), and striking predominantly with the third knuckle. That is the way my coach taught me how to throw hooks when in at close or short range, and I can tell you, I can feel a considerable amount of extra whip or pop in my left hooks, as opposed to when I use to always throw with the thumb pointing to the ceiling. It honestly feels more powerful, although I am still not exactly sure of the mechanics that make it more powerful.
I had a friend was a boxer from PR since he was a kid and he was adamant this was the proper way to throw a hook. Turn it over as you are coming in for the ribs as if checking the time prior to breakin some ribs.
The change in the hooks is strange. I don't think it's anything to do with Margarito's eye though. I know David Lemiuex likes to throw them like that too and he's a devestating puncher. But, when I'm on the bag I can throw left hooks much harder with the thumb up. But then I'm not a professional fighter. Who knows? :conf
