There are only very very few high level opponents for a casual fan like you. Murray, Macklin and Geale prove themselves solid, top contenders before they fought GGG, and Jacobs did show that he could bang against higher level opponents.

I think you guys are both "correct" in a certain sense, which is why I try my very best to avoid using letter grades to label fighters when I think of it, because to me, there are two different subsets of grading: active fighters & historical greats.

Any historical great was most likely an A-level talent in their heyday.

But in terms of active fighters, I think there's more flexibility in saying "he's a B- fighter". I tend to view top rated guys at any given point as inherently "B-C" area type guys minimum, and fringe contenders more along the lines of "C-D" levels, and then your lower tier guys being solid "D's".

Anyway, my point I was trying to make is using the letter grading system to rate fighters is a tricky business.

You're right. From an historical point of view, like when you judge a certified ATG's career, I'd agree with your assesments, rating contenders from B to D and with that respect GGG opponents would fit around C to D, maybe except for Murray, Jacobs and maybe Lemieux with a push. But he's just there yet.

But when you're making a p4p rankings, judging fighters who are in the middle of their careers, I wouldn't rate any ranked contender lower than C, especially the ones who has wins over fellow contenders. I mean, If we are to call guys like Murray and Quillin low level fighters, we're mostly wasting out time here in the general forum.

Casual fan? Look in the mirror at yourself kid. I have been a boxing fan for the last 28 years. A real boxing fan. Casual fans are people like you who will just look at a fighters record and get impressed without doing work to see who they fought. GGG faces guys who are either smaller than him or guys who aren't that good. Jacobs is basically the same.

I'm afraid I'm going to need exact definitions of what A,B,C,D,E and F level fighters are before this thread can continue...

Oh, it's just arbitrary nonsense used to big up or belittle a resume? Crack on then

Didn't realize what a crap year GGG actually had. But like you said 2017 is looking much better and Jacobs is certainly his best opponent yet.

You're the one who's going by boxrec without doing work to see who they fought. I was familiar with every one of GGG's opponents (except Fuchigami) before he fought them and have seen them fight. Same goes for Jacobs' opponents Quillin, Mora, Truax and Smith. Try to follow the fighters before labelling them.
