Here are two fights from late in the career of Eduardo Lausse. After his initial run as a leading contender in the mid 50s, Lausse returned to the US in the early 60s to make one last go at a world title shot. In the first of these fights, Lausse bombed out the tough perennial fringe contender Wilf Greaves: [yt]QScfQfpisE8[/yt] However, Lausse's comeback success came to a screeching halt against rugged Frenchman Marcel Pigou, who withstood a vicious early beating and then rallied to stop Lausse in one of the greatest slugfests ever IMO: [yt]0jH6hTdRaB8[/yt] (Special thanks to Raging B(_)LL, who provided some "missing" parts of this fight.) The loss to Pigou effectively ended Lausse's career, although he did win one more fight (vs. rugged fringe contender Victor Zalazar) before retiring for good. On a side note, what do you think of the stoppages in either fight?
I wrote in my article on Lausse that Eduardo had Pigou in worse shape earlier in the fight than Pigou had him in at the time of the stoppage. I think Mercante gave Pigou the benefit of the doubt that he denied Lausse.
Lausse wasn't throwing punches back after getting knocked down, while Pigou was still trying to throw shot and exchange wildly with the Argentine, even as he was getting pummeled. That being said, this stoppage does seem premature, especially given the beating Pigou sustained only two rounds before. Hell of a fight indeed, M2S! Thanks for the upload! :good
Love watching Lausse. He just throws bomb after bomb. That fight with Pigou is a great one and so is his fight with Fullmer. A fight between him and Florentino Fernandez would have been brutal. A shame it never happened.
