8 of the top 10 ranked welterweights according to The Ring are under 5'9". Just sayin'. The tallest one is 5'10".
What an excellent post, I was gonna write the same thing about jabbing to the body too. Since I don't wanna be regurgutating a lot of stuff I will try to expand: Tall opponent usually have lousy guards to the body. When they jab - which they usually do plenty since it's the easiest and safest way to beat a smaller opponent - a huge gap opens up that you could target. You went too much headhunting in there, when you saw that you couldn't reach him to the head you should have tried something else. You became predictable in there. Try to time his jab and counter with your own to the body. This guy had his elbows a bit wide so there were opportunities. Either bend your body inwards or put your right hand up to protect yourself from his jab. After the jab, an overhand right or a lefthook could follow. Another thing - keep your hands up much higher! If you don't move your head you cannot get away with that. This is actually your biggest flaw and the most correctable one too. It's easy to bullrush when you get desperate - and sometimes you have to when you can't reach him - but you should pick your spots a bit more. You bullrushed all the time and as a result, he moved and made you get off-balance. I myself have an extremely tall heavyweight in my gym and sometimes I do this Ricky Hatton **** too even though I'm quite tidy when fighting opponents my own size so I know how it must have been. But, dance around a bit more outside his reach and THEN attack - with control. If you attack such a large foe all the time you will get tired and frustrated. It appears you didn't think much. But yes, he was difficult. He was much quicker and stronger than you and had a sharp jab, so it wasn't easy to get inside. But the guard, predictablity, pulling straight back and neglect to the body cannot be attributed to that so you have some things to work on. Mad props to you though and take this the right way. If you do these things you will get much, much better! I respect everyone who steps into the ring!
Nice job Tito. Hopefully you get better results next time when you have more time to train/prepare and are fighting somebody closer to your size.
Depends on your age and if you are still growing. Just work on keeping the body fat low if you are young and growing.
