Might have something to do with the fact only one man came to fight. Leading with your head, running, dummying up, throwing three punches a round, spoiling and faking low blows and injuries is not boxing. Hopkins couldn't handle the pace Calzaghe set.
Won the first 7 rounds and dropped him. Nah had to do with bhop schooling Joe and he and his dad being frustrated they couldn’t solve the puzzle
Hi... New to the forum but have been watching Rummy's videos for a long time!.... Thanks for another great addition... Really enjoyed it.
I'd be curious to hear which middleweights you think have beaten other historically great middles, and which ones they beat in your estimation. Robinson aside, who do you believe did?
By what standard, though? True. But in my humble opinion this is a testament to his longevity. I do not personally view this as something that detracts from his career at 175. Quite the contrary, I think it amplifies what he did at an old age, because he always needed to be prepared to go 12 hard rounds against younger/stronger guys.
Hopkins past 40 was a fighter who had a very low output, would clinch, hold, grab, wrestle, and foul his opponents and he also faked injuries in order to get out of fights he was losing. ‘Borenard’ was a very real thing his fights at that stage were almost unwatchable.
They did solve the puzzle. The fight was close I'll admit that but the right man won. Even Joe Cortez, one of the most useless biased refs there's ever been told Hopkins to cut the nonsense out. You can only dress up dirty, boring fighting as 'the sweet science ' up to a point. This is one of those occasions where it caught up with Hopkins. Calzaghe was on him from the opening bell to the last, cutting him off and making him work. He couldn't control the tempo of the fight.
I agree with the 2nd statement. His longevity is unparalleled, even greater than Old Mongoose. I was merely stating a fact. However, as far as the 1st statement is concerned, I stand by it. He never beat a great lightheavyweight by anyone's standard. He is an atg middleweight, but not an atg lightheavyweight. Considering his actual record and level of opposition at 175, that is obvious. But again, his longevity is nothing short of remarkable.
Very boring boxer. Sport is the entertainment business. He’s even worse out of the ring. He never makes sense about anything.
