In other words Toney performed to the level of his opponent, so the rest of your point is moot no?

Prime for prime, Ward would outbox Toney to win a clear decision

Never. A prime (and halfway focused and in shape) Toney would have no problems with Ward.
But if Toney comes in weight-drained and weak, like he was more than once, then who knows, maybe Ward could steal a lot of rounds through activity and win a decision. But still never outbox Toney.

So what happened against Roy Jones? He also got his head boxed off by Nunn for most of that fight. What happened against Thadzi? Montell Griffen? Peter?

Don't act like Toney was ever unbeatable, being a professional is about always fighting well and being in shape regardless of who you're facing. Toney didn't perform to the level of his opponents, he performed well sometimes and terribly other times, nothing to do with his opponents. Toney has some ATG performances and some journeyman performances. Toney at his best is at a style disadvantage against Ward, Toney's poor footwork and Ward's measured aggression is Toney's worst nightmare. Ward is a master of timing, it wouldn't look too different to the beating Roy Jones put on Toney.

You're using his performances against Nunn and Jones as some sort of statement regarding Toneys focus? This is Nunn and Jones we're talking about, guys leagues above anything Ward's faced.
Griffin of the mid-90's was a handy operator and would be mixing it at the top today. I'm not saying he's ATG material but solid, he'd be a top 3 win for Ward to put it into perspective.
Thadzi, I'll give you that but PETER???? PETER??? You have got to be kidding me surely.....

But you're right about Ward being the master of timing, something toney was terrible at.......

And to say it wouldn't look too different to what Jones did is a joke, Ward dreams of a Jones like performance.

What about the Peter fight? Toney made Peter look like Ali in that second fight.

Ward has never fought anybody on Jones level but Michael Nunn isn't all conquering, I'm not sure that he's better than the likes of Kessler and Dawson. The point I was making was that Toney didn't just fight to the level of his opponent, because he got dominated by Jones and Nunn for most of that fight.

Toney's timing is fantastic on the inside, when he has somebody constantly coming forward (Barkley, Jirov). Where it's not great is on the outside, Toney has cement feet and him swinging at air all night like the Jones fight is what would happen against Ward.

You're seriously underestimating Ward, he hasn't been anything but dominant as a pro against some very good opposition that could've certainly given Toney a close fight. ****, you only had to be Montell Griffen or Thadzi to give Toney an L.
Ward would never lose to the likes of those guys, he's a professional.

Great matchup. A prime Toney edges it though.

Toney at that point was shot and fighting in a weight class he had no business being in how is that fight relevant?
mw Nunn was much better than 1d Kessler and the version of Dawson ward faced
Jones and Nunn were elite when he fought them. Much better than anyone that Ward has fought.
    No
Ward doesn't have Jones's footspeed or cat like reflexes
Froch and Ward are decent, but no where as good as McCallum, R.Johnson or Nunn.

Michael Nunn was a top five p4p'er when Toney fought him. This isn't Mikkel Kessler, folks.
