This is what happens as fighters age, the fans lose objectivity and believe that the boxers back then were better than now. Jones and Toney were my two favourite boxers for years.
Toney could be ordinary at times, but even at his best if you're being objective you know that Ward would be an extremely tough match up for him. Toney could've beaten Calzaghe with no problems imo but Ward is too good with his feet and timing from the outside. Ward has ATG potential and nobody in history is going to have an easy night with him at super middle. If Ward fought Toney on the inside it would be close but I'd favour Toney. If Ward fought at range then he would outbox Toney. No question, due to his superior footwork. Jones, Peter, Griffin and Nunn for most of that fight gave Toney hell just by moving. Toney could always land a punch on Ward like he did against Nunn, we'll never know. But looking at their styles, characteristics and level of consistency/professionalism then you have to pick Ward h2h, anytime.

He was too good and had too much skill.if better fighters were around he would have raised his game more often.as it was,he got fat and didnt train properly.so, as a complete package he was flawed, his skills as a boxer were different class.

    Agreed.

  7. Prime Toney eats Ward for breakfast. Or rather, he takes him as a drink before breakfast, when waking up.

Wards chin hasnt really been tested . We still dont really know how good his jaw is , If Toney caught him flush back in his day , it could have very well been "LIGHTS OUT" for Ward .

Toney in his peak is a dangerous fight for anyone .

Ward struggled against Bika and in the early rounds against Abraham. He's not a 100% outside fighter, he doesn't have the athleticism to stay at range all the time like Dirrell for example, that's why he does a lot of inside fighting and clinching.

Oh yes it has been tested.

Ward is no Roy Jones Junior, he's not quick enough to fight an in and out fight without getting clipped by Toney. On the inside Toney is in a different league, he'd tire Ward out and KO him mid rounds. Toney was another level, I think people forget how good the guy really was.

I'm sorry, but I will have to disagree with the majority of the people here.

Toney will make ward his lil BI*SH if they ever met prime 4 prime.

Toney fought way better talent in his hay day.

Toney, even from the outside, is clearly the more fluid, loose, and sharp of the two. And overall, more equipped for a pure outside chess-match. Better jab, also.

Ward's more of the spoiler variety.
