It`s amazing how NOW Teddy and other people say that Pascal isn`t all that. He only beat the guy who everyone thougft was THE man at 175 (Dawson). I do feel that Hopkins may have had something to do with Pascal losing both fights. Teddy is not giving Hopkins his due when he says it`s part of the` landscape` of boxing now, that`s why Hopkins could win. Now everyone will say that Dawson beats him... Why not just say that it was a great victory by a great old time fighter, triumphing over the younger champion ... Pascal got schooled by a legend, that it...
As much as I deslike Teddy's view on fighters and fights, he was right on the aftermath of this - Jean Pascal punches too wide, doesn't pace himself and doesn't have the sense of distance and timing to win a clear boxing match against an elite strategian. The oly thing I cannot agree with is that Nard won just based on that. Nard has redeveloped or rerefined technical skills, punch speed and accuracy to deal first with Wright's effectiveness, Pavlik's volume and power, Jones' above average handspeed still and Pascal's power and speed... I do agree he was not able to deal with Calzaghe's pace and volume though.
I didn't have a problem with anything Atlas said.I think it's pretty much known that the quality in skilled boxers as declined with the quality of skilled trainers and available gyms. Hopkins would definitely have more trouble if were living in a more prosperous (boxingwise) era.
Here's why BHop is more right than Teddy: BH made Pascal look worse than he is. Pascal was much better against Dawson, a very good fighter.
Well I do have an issue with it, particularly the statement that Hopkins "is taking advantage of these fighters today" because they don't know how to box. **** that, these guys like Pascal are supposed to be division world champions, will he say the same thing for Dawson ... a guy that's reckoned to be as good a technical boxer as Floyd Mayweather (not my opinion btw) Atlas needs to stfu.
Dawson was horrendous in that fight, I guess you could give Pascal the credit for that, but I won't, Dawson pretty much defeated himself. Hopkins pretty much exposed Pascal, Dawson, if he was really top 10 P4P, would have done the same. AT the end of the fight, before the cut, he was starting to wake up, but it was way too late. His cornerman should have punched Dawson to wake him up sooner... Both Dawson and Pascal were hyped.
Interesting discussion. Atlas was unrelenting in his opinion. But BHop is a good communicator and held his ground very well.
