there's a wonderful (or not) thread on Pac's unorthodox technique in the training section where we argue that his power comes from his calves and others argue its impossible to get your calves involved, but the way he jumps around in these vids and the way his feet leave the canvas every single time he punches leads me to believe that that little launch really is where he generates his power without planting and why he doesn't need a lot of space sometimes to get force in his blows. Yeah, if it weren't Pac doing the shadow boxing he would probably be subject to a huge amount of criticism about certain things, but whatever he does works in the ring so its all good. I think he isn't throwing as many punches as he used to, he waits a whole lot now, but then again I thought before the De La Hoya fight Oscar looked super fast and Pac looked lethargic warming up, boy was that the opposite of what happened in the ring.
I usually think of these like those "speed tests" that Floyd does. He's just keeping his speed sharp here but im not sure how much power is really in them. What I do notice is that his torso pivots a lot less than before in these quick flurries, I'll have to compare it wit some actual fights. If it is the case so, then it probably really is the legs doing all the power.
In traditional martial arts, the collection and release of power in punches starts with your toes and moves it's way up thru your stomach. A lot of Pac's moves are fundamental to martial arts imo. His short vertical/crossing punches, his leaping punch, the way he bounces on his toes... is it all coincidence? I wonder. Although, imo he doesn't generate his power thru torque like a big man, but thru rapid acceleration/energy release. You could use words like ki or chi but that may freak some of the posters here out lol.
Well the reason being is that usage of the feet shifts more weight into your punch than using the torque from your torso since it includes the lower body weight. Ortiz uses his upper body more which is why like Merchant said "his back looks like an aircraft carrier." Pac has always had huge calves but the Cotto fight showed he also had tree trunk thighs as well. This content is protected Using your legs to generate full power will shift your weight violently which sometimes leaves you off balance, which I've seen in clips of all sorts of big hitters.
In the dressing room warming up I meant, Pac looked oddly not active. Saving it for the fight! Then they cut to Oscar throwing sharp combinations on the mitts and I thought, uh oh, big and fast. Heh heh heh Thank goodness that played out like it did.
nostradumbass here.. and i'm sure you put the bank on pac after you saw this.. when Oscar sent Valero home, that was when the fat lady sung
