Carl Froch a good example of that? Or is that doing him an injustice? I think of the Taylor and Dirrell fights.
Froch is a fair comparison. I don't think it necessarily does him any injustice, although I would confidently say, P4P Wilder carries a lot more pop, and Froch is a lot more technically sound. But the heart and determination have definite similarities I would say, for sure. This kind of reminds me somewhat of the dynamics of Froch-Taylor.
My problem with Wilder was that before last night he has never really been challenged so there was no way to know how he would deal with a fight where he had to overcome adversity. It took him over 30 fights to step in the ring with a live opponent but not even then WBC Champion Stiverne really performed well against him and it was all too easy for him and we learned nothing about him except that he could hit hard and didn't have the most polished skill set. Ortiz had him in trouble and forced him to dig deep and Wilder proved a hell of a lot more in that fight about himself and his toughness physically and mentally than he did in any of his previous 39 fights. As I said in a different thread, it's going to take a lot to win me over as a fan after spending six years building a ridiculously padded record but I have to give him the credit due and recognize that he is a legitimate world level fighter and a dangerous opponent for anyone in the division.
The fight pretty much went how I predicted. With Deontay having trouble with Ortiz early on, before the inivitable windmilling to force a stoppage. I never bought Ortiz as iron chinned, to survive the onslaught once Wilder got down to business. The biggest factor was the speed difference. It was apparent in Donkey Kongs last fights, that he weren't quick and powerful enough to deal with Wilder . I couldn't see Malik Scott going 12 rounds with that bodybuilder Joshua. People criticising Deontay for coming in too light, but the myth of having bulky muscle being the only way to generate power is debunked again.
Yep. Sometimes a fighter only needs to have the ability to do just a few things well. And Wilder does just enough to find ways to unleash his power effectively, despite how ugly it sometimes looks in doing so.
Wasting your talents on the heavyweight circus, Rummy...pearls to swine. Where's the dawn of the Bivol era video?
Definitely an injustice. Froch was a much better all-around boxer than Wilder likely ever will be. And those Taylor and Dirrell fights were far from the schoolings that many folks committed them to memory as having been. Some reappraisal may be due. Reminds me that I've been meaning to revisit Froch-Taylor with a thread here and a RBR breakdown.
-- Wore his silly mask while being escorted out by washed up has been Lil Kim already knowing the fight was fixed. -- During the stare down during the refs instructions, the look of disgust from Ortiz was fantastic. -- Had an ugly beard to try and protect his fragile chin. -- Continuously rocked by Ortiz jabs, a heart patient, which caused him to stumble all over. -- Almost knocked down by previously mentioned heart patient, who was also off his meds. -- Ortiz had him just about out, and like Zack Morris, Wilder was saved by the bell. -- Ortiz took it easy on him the next round, and Wilder landed a few lucky punches for the win -- Joshua will KO him round 3.... if he dares.
I really wasn't planning on doing another video for the next few weeks, but I couldn't resist trying a quick one on that fight. That was a fun heavyweight championship fight to watch! I'll definitely be doing something on Bivol and 175 in April! Unfortunately both of these bouts happened at a point when I'm unusually short on free time.
I honestly don't know who would win. Joshua is technically far more sound. But Wilder is so explosive. I have no idea what would happen, but I'd really like the chance soon to find out.
I really hope so, but these days, it seems trendy to make fans wait for the big fights. Hopefully these two turn that terrible trend around and get to business. I'm cautiously optimistic, but who knows.
