    MAJR,

Yeah but that opportunity never had a chance of happening. He was never going to get a massive guaranteed payday, unless he'd have made waves in the division and gone Stateside etc. He was relatively unknown on a global scale back then. The U.S. fans had only seen him a handful of times, and he hadn't really impressed them as a whole.

I understand that. He had a decision to make. Either forget Roy, or give up his belt, move up and take the risk. He didn't want to take the risk. But if he truly believed he could have beaten Roy, he could have made steps to get a fight with him, again, moving up to 175 etc, and then he'd have got bigger fights, more exposure and bigger paydays etc. If he'd have beaten Roy he'd have been a superstar.

I don't think he did think he had a chance of beating him. Again, I think if he thought he had a legitimate chance, he'd have pursued Roy.

But again, it was never going to happen unless he chased it. The best fighter in the world at 175, wasn't going to go out of his way, to fight an unknown European 168 fighter.

I respect your opinion. For me, all the signs pointed to the fact that Joe didn't believe he could have truly beaten him.

In 2001, after McIntyre, he told the world he wanted Roy. What did he do afterwards? He remained in Britain at 168, and continued to do what he'd been doing previously.

You are quoting a father comforting his worried son :patsch:lol:

You are bringing up comments that you havent read first hand and havent seen the whole paragraph of and jumping on that.
Be honest have you read the whole paragraphs?
You say this Loudon, but answer honestly now and stop ducking questions.
Why do you deny and rule out that Calzaghe agreed to face Jones in 00, after the Woodhall fight? Only for Jones to have a change of mind.
    Why deny that?

When you are shown links of Calzaghe calling Jones out you say that cant be genuine etc and then when Jones admits its true you imply Jones wasnt telling the truth.

Still first question first, why do you deny it?

How many times have we done this? Ha!

Why do you believe Joe, yet when I prove he was lying, then back down and say it was just an off the cuff remark?

Videos and links of Joe saying that he chased Roy, are NOT PROOF that he actually did. You only have proof of Joe SAYING he did.

He says he chased Roy for 5 or 6 years.

He turned pro in 93, and then he retired in 2008.

That's a 15 year career. For 11 of those 15 years, they fought in different weight classes.

How can you chase someone, if you're fighting in Britain at 168, and the guy your chasing is in America at 175?

I don't care what Joe said. His resume proves that he was telling porkies.

In 2008, Roy didn't agree that Joe had chased him for 5 or 6 years, he just said that he was aware that he'd wanted to fight him for a while.

    You have no argument whatsoever.

    1993 - Joe turned pro.

1999 - He said he wasn't chasing Roy, and he didn't want tough fights. That rules out 94, 95, 96, 97, and 98.

2000 - Frank W enquired about a possible fight as Roy's HBO contract was coming to an end. Roy later re-signed.

2001 - Said he wanted Roy, but then carried on fighting in Britain at 168.

2002 - Frank had talks with Roy's advisors, and Roy signed to fight Ruiz.

2003 - Roy fights at heavy, then goes back for Tarver.

2004 - Roy rematches Tarver and fights Glen Johnson.

2006 - Frank had talks with Roy, despite the fact that he was on a 3 fight losing streak.

2007 - Joe said Roy wasn't the same after being knocked out twice in 2004, and a fight between them would be pointless. Of course that makes Frank's talks the previous year in 2006, laughable. It also means that Joe wouldn't have been interested in a 2005 match up.

2008 - Joe said he'd be disappointed if Roy was to be his last fight, and said he wasn't a great fighter anymore.

Joe then retires in Nov 2008, after fighting Roy.

So, Frank made a few enquiries in 2000, and he had actual talks in 2002 and 2006.

Again, out of Joe's 15 year career, 11 of those years were spent in a different weight class.

So according to Joe, fighting for 11 years in a different weight class, and your promoter having talks on two occasions, and making an enquiry, constitutes as chasing someone for 5 or 6 years.

Before you say it, it wasn't an off the cuff remark.

I've been honest, and I've put down what really happened.

    The conclusion is this:

What Joe said, was complete HORSE****!

It is my honest opinion Joe Calzaghe knew good and well that he could not beat a prime Roy Jones...

He has just made too many statements that support it.. He was unsure if he could win at the very least.

    bailey,

Why does the statement Joe said to his son hold no weight? I can understand if it was the first time something like that came out of Joe's mouth, then yeah give him the benefit of the doubt... But that is not the case, It is a statement very consistent with numerous statements Joe made to the public about Roy no longer being great.

Videos of Prime Roy made the boy cry.. Calzaghe comforted his son with the truth, that Roy was no longer the fighter in those highlight reels. This is not hard to understand.

Are you saying that Calzaghe was well aware he was getting in the ring with a Prime Roy Jones, and he lied to his son about the dangers he was facing just to calm him down?? Do you really believe this?
