Love how Newman quickly got between Bowe and Lewis to ensure a fight didn't break out. Newman and team Bowe in general were never known to be shy in regards to starting a fight, Tillery, Fanman, Donald, Golota etc. But when Lewis was the man opposite Bowe, Newman suddenly became a pacifist. Was Bowe scared, maybe, maybe not, but he acted like a coward and his team did what they did to protect him. Only time Bowe agreed to the fight was when he had nothing to lose, no title and no prospect of a shot other than Lewis, who didn't low ball Bowe like Newman did. Lewis was definitely the more confident of the two. He eventually accepted the low offer of $3million or 10% cut, only for that offer to be withdrawn and when he came to negotiating the fight when he had the belt he was generous and gave a 60/40 split.
Bowe, even under Futch, wasn't near perfect. He had poor defense, and didn't fight very well on the outside.
True, it amazes me that just because a fighter is exciting and good offensively some fans ignore skills like defence and footwork. Bowe was exciting and had tons of potential but he was nowhere near the finished article. Even Futch always talked about his potential greatness not his actual greatness, Bowe never became the more complete fighter Futch had hoped for. Yet his fans seem to think he was something he clearly wasn't.
You are going to be hit when you face a prime ATG Holyfield 3 times. Was Lewis not extremely hittable ? It only took MaCall 2 rounds to find his chin and turn him over for the count.
So he was hittable only when he was washed up, chronically malnourished and at the end of his career ? Ok.
Lewis would have been the hardest puncher Bowe had fought up to that point. How would he have reacted to a Lewis right hand?
You can say whatever excuses you want, Bowe was actually in shape in the second fight, he trained hard for that.
