Kovalev just lost a few steps, his legs aren't nearly as fast as pre Chilemba. Still, he was good enough to beat Ward the first time and even the Version Alvarez beat was world class. But prime Kovalev was a sight to behold, maybe he didn't take care of himself as well as he should have or maybe his stamina drop had a little to do with the banning of meldonium, we'll never know.
Good point, Alvarez's feat being totally lost. He boxed great and picked up a huge victory. Also not sure where Alvarez goes from here. I would guess a lukewarm defense before a unification shot? If Kovalev doesn't go for an immediate rematch I imagine he will take a couple Mikalkhin-esque fights before going aiming back at the top.
Not really prime anymore, but still a force at Light-Heavyweight if you ask me, and I certainly won't count him out if we get an immidiate rematch. Problem for Kova is that current LHW is a shark tank.
Hopefully he goes straight into a unification, he's 34 and surely can't wait too long. I'd love to see him vs Bivol, Beterbiev, or Stevenson
It was an excellent match up until the depressing stoppage. Good points all around except for the Ward winning the first fight crack. I was going to suggest Eleider was a potential threat to Ward stylistically, and that I wanted to see SOB come back to possibly be forcibly retired again, but at that point I 'd already made an enemy out of almost everyone on the RBR anyway, no need to add even more fuel to that fire. But yeah, I'd love to see Eleider fight Ward. Kovalev I don't think is completely done, although I do think he's been having issues not necessarily making weight, but being strong at the weight, he can still make LHW rather easily, but he can't overdo it all that much by packing too much muscle and maintaining his optimal strength. While he's always looked lean and mean at LHW, that's been morphing into scrawny and spindly since the Ward rematch. He's like Canelo, who's too big for LMW, but too damn small for MW, Sergey is stuck is a similar predicament. He'd be wrecked at Cruiser, but he's outgrown LHW at least enough to be strong there, and the drinking hasn't helped. So I'm not sure where Kovalev could go from here. I could see him taking a few 180-185 catchweight Canelo/Cottoweight matches against some other LHW's in non title matches, but I'm not sure its worth the risk for an opponent or for Kovalev tbh. Kovalev is stuck between a rock and a hard place, and Father Time.
I saw someone raise a random point/question that's decent... Who are the biggest/best punchers that Kovalev has fought?
people are acting like kovalev was toyed with and lost every round, in reality he lost 2 rounds max and was dominating until the stoppage.
What, when everything was super heated immediately after the fight had just ended? Last I checked things had started to cool down, no one in this thread has said anything ******ed for starters.
There was still a few a day or two later arguing that Eleider dominated him from start to finish. IKSAB and that idiot youppi in particular.
