Percy Bassett TKO 10 Seraphin Ferrer

Bassett was one of the top FW contenders of the '50s. He was a tough, aggressive banger. He was credited as being the "duration" or "interim" FW champ in the time that the actual champ Sandy Saddler was in the army. A fight between the two was a natural, and it looked all poised to happen in early '55 following Saddler's discharge from the service. However, just as it was on the cusp of happening, Bassett was upset by Teddy "Red Top" Davis, and Davis went on to get the "unification" fight with Saddler instead. Bassett then moved up in weight and tried to break into the LW rankings, and that is the fight you see here, vs. unbeaten prospect Seraphin Ferrer on Ferrer's home turf in France. Like Bassett, Ferrer was a big puncher, and was coming off an impressive KO win over the recently deposed LW champ Paddy DeMarco.

Jose Stable W 10 Charley Scott, round 4

Stable was a very exciting, highly rated WW contender for a brief time in the '60s. This here was one of a string of wins that led him to an eventual shot at the champion Emile Griffith. Stable gave Griff a good fight, but took a fair amount of punishment in the late rounds and lost a decision. He never seemed to recover from the fight and quickly went downhill afterward.

Gaspar "Indian" Ortega W 10 Benny "Kid" Paret I, round 1

Two exciting and popular WWs from the '60s. Paret of course went on to win the title after this, but would lose again to Ortega in a non-title match. Paret then lost his title to Griffith, but Ortega's wins over Paret earned him a shot at Griff's title even before Paret could get a rematch. Griff surprisingly stopped the iron-chinned Ortaga late (the first of only two times he was ever stopped in his nearly 200-fight career), but Ortega would remain a respected contender and crowd favorite throughout the decade.

Buster Mathis W 12 George Chuvalo, round 1

About as wild a first round as you'll ever see, in an underrated HW battle. An important crossroads fight in both men's careers, as both were on the comeback trail following brutal stoppage losses to Joe Frazier.

Notorious '60s "spoiler" Gonzalez pulls off another upset as he busts up an up-and-coming Carter and stops him on cuts. (I believe the whole fight in its entirety is elsewhere on youtube.)

Gregorio Peralta W 10 Willie Pastrano I, round 6

Peralta earns a shot at the LHW title with a beatdown of Pastrano in a non-title fight. In their rematch, Pastrano turned in the last great performance of his career and stopped Peralta on cuts.
