Here's perennial MW contender Holly Mims against a very young, up-and-coming Jimmy Ellis:

This is the first of two meetings between Mims and Ellis. At this time, Mims was still considered a very dangerous fringe contender, and had a wealth of experience. By contrast, Ellis had had only a handful of fights, and was basically being thrown to the wolves. Even so, Ellis did show flashes of his future potential at this stage of his career, even when losing this fight. Mims won this fight, which was probably the last noteworthy win of his long career, and still showed impressive form despite his relatively advanced age. Ellis won a decision in a rematch, which briefly put him into the MW picture, but punishing losses to Ruben Carter and others squandered whatever potential he might've had at this point. Years later, Ellis hooked up with Angelo Dundee, who helped Ellis add some girth to his physique (reportedly after having his tonsils removed) and eventually guided him all the way to a partial HW title, which is much, much more than anyone ever expected of Ellis back when he was a MW.

I love Mims. I love his ten-rounder with Giardello. Ellis, his head movement is crazy, why is he even doing that?! No point in doing that at all, looks like a nervous tike. Flashes, like you say.

This thread is absolutely brilliant. If there is a way to set up a paypal account to donate towards Raging Bull's library and efforts I would pay $5 a month. That's my word. Or perhaps an address I can send a check to that would ensure this goes towards the efforts of this rare footage. I'd pay at least $75 right now if I could get my eyes to see a Gypsy Joe fight in it's entirety*.

*I'd pay more if I knew the concrete value it would take to obtain such a film.

The George Chuvalo-Mike DeJohn fight is a classic! Not in the sense that it's a real barn burner, but it's hilarious. The ref helps DeJohn up after Chuvalo sparks him with a good one! I remember seeing snippets of this fight in "Facing Ali" where Chuvalo mentioned, "they really had it against me" (I'm paraphrasing here).

Also, Buster Mathis looks like a beast and a half in those two videos. Granted he was facing lesser known opposition, but the way he fought 'em reminded me a little of Bowe and Lennox Lewis' styles meshed together. That huge right uppercut (also a finisher punch in the video) looked like something a la Lennox.

Yama Bahama's got some long arms for a little body. His jab is a longer stiffer version of Qawi's "up-jab", and it looks nice and sharp.

I wish I had more time to watch all this video! Great stuff!
