In this afternoon, October 23th, the WBO female mini-flyweight title bout between challenger Nguyen Thi Thu Nhi (Vietnam) and the defending champion Etsuko Tada (Japan) took place at the Wadong gymnasium., Ansan, South Korea. The Vietnamese won a unanimous decision after 10 rounds, thereby becoming the first Vietnamese pro boxer to win a championship from one the 4 major sanctioning bodies. This is just her fifth professional bouts. Congratulation to my compatriot, hopefully we will see more Vietnamese fighters joining the pro ranks in the future.
Yep I had to double check, it seems legits. No international outlets has reported this bouts, I got this from Vietnamese newspaper.
It's on fight news,Tada was 40 years old! Scores were all 96-94. Not to takeaway anything from Nhi, she was the first of her nation to win a belt. Vietnam has 97 million people There is a photo on fight news.com
Yep Nhi defeated a 4-time world champion at her 5th pro bouts, that's awesome. Vietnam outlaws prizefighting so it's hard to find a promising fighter. I hope the Vietnamese government realizes the potential, prizefighting makes big bucks everywhere. Philipine, Thailand, Indonesia all have plenty of combat sports champion so why not Vietnam.
They all qualify for mini flyweight division, which is 105 or less I guess. I'd like to see a mini flyweight fight. I doubt they make a lot of money, especially the females. Little experience is common now for the extreme lower weights.
At least they have a chance to earn money with their craft, after their amateur careers are over their only option is to become a trainer for the national team or open a gym. Vietnamese combat sports athletes make very little money from competition, often broke and plagued with injuries when they retire. It's sad, really.
Vietnam's making noise in MMA, its time to make noise in boxing! Congrats and hope to see more Viet boxers soon!
