I like Calzaghe by close decision ,but it wont be a pretty fight Hopkins knows all the tricks and if Joe gets mad Bernard will take it,controlled aggression is the key to Calzaghes fight ,imo ,he must not let Hopkins set the pace,,it may be ugly ,but it should be fascinating.

Dont understand where you are coming from there mate.

The winner of this is going to be the best fighter from 160-175 of this generation.

    Not an insignificant event.

I would already say b-Hop is...so how (IMO) would winning or lose help. If he loses at 43 does that also mean that maybe he was not as good as previously thought. Again I like B-hop...but I would like even more for him to retire

It is an important fight, especially for Calzaghe!

Anyway, I would be amazed if this fight doesn't go the distance and I think Joe's speed could be the key to the fight, assuming that the occasion doesn't get to him ( I don't think it will). Against Tarver, BHop basically had his own way for most of the fight so it was hard to see how much his age will affect him in a faster-paced fight. Calzaghe can't allow himself to be sucked into a brawl as that will suit BHop more. Joe can make this a dull fight but a dull fight would be the easiest route for him. The key factors for me are:
    • Whether Calzaghe's left hand holds up
    • How BHop copes at a fast pace at age 43
    • Whether the occasion and fighting abroad get to Calzaghe
    • Whether BHop's much vaunted ring tactician skills figure out Calzahe's awkward style
    • Who best imposes their style on the other
    • How well BHop copes with Calzaghe's speed
    Looking forward to this fight!

Snap. Exactly how I think Calzaghe should approach the fight to get the W. Taylor gave Hopkjins a mirror image of himself. He used the perimiter of the ring, ocassionally rushed forward, and used the jab. If Calzaghe comes forward aggressively trying to outwork Hopkins, he will probably give Hopkins the opportunities to land often.

The workrate of Calzaghe worries me, but only if Hopkins gets drawn into a battle. Hopkins has the ring generalship and defensive awareness to nuffle out Calzaghe's effectiveness.

Calzaghe has openly admitted that he prefers fighters who come forward, ala Lacy. Kessler got off with his punches, fired some nice straight rights, but he was very static from the waist up and never seen the openings that Hopkins will be able to see. Kessler doesn't bring the same intelligence to the table.

And Calzaghe's wide punches might well be his undoing at times. He'll leave that seam up the middle for Hopkins to capitalize, especially with the straight right hand.

Hopkins seldomly jabs with a southpaw. He thew about a dozen jabs combined against Tarver and Wright. However, he does like to step inside to work the body, and his long range weaponry is usually the hook and right hand. Always heavy punches.

Calzaghe is overated. I dont like the way he throws arm punches. I saw threads of people picking him over archie moore and rocky marciano.......ridiculous.

I think Hopkins takes him to school

My scorecard for the fight was 115/112 for Calzaghe. I had picked Hopkins by SD in a close one. Hard fight to score. Hopkins did manage to score with the more meaningful blows in the first half of the fight and perhaps throughout. but Calzaghe began to impose his style and pace in about the third round and became stronger as the fight progressed, while Hopkins' pace decreased.. Calzaghe tightened his punches and his defense initiating with Bernard, then stepping back to avoid Hopkins' lunges. Calzaghe showed very good ability to adapt to a difficult style. I thought Hopkins would be able to negate alot of Calzaghe's offense (which he was able to do for much of the fight) as he has done with practically everyone he has fought. Hopkins has a style and physicality that gives any middleweight in history a very hard go.
What surprised me in regards to Joe, was his physical strength.(I believed it surprised Hopkins as well) Hopkins was not totally able to impose his blueprint for the fight like he had planned. He found out the clinches with Joe were a taxing experience, with Calzaghe being able to give as good as he received with rabbit punches and low blows etc. Another thing I feel surprised Hopkins, was Joe's pressure...I'm sure Hopkins thought that Calzaghe wouldn't press him so hard...What Calzaghe did in pressuring a brilliant counterpuncher was very impressive to me!
I considered myself a Hopkins fan, but I now have a greater appreciation of Calzaghe. I knew he was good, but he is truly an elite fighter, make that a great fighter! I'm a fan.
Overall, I really enjoyed the fight, both fought to the best of their ability, Hopkins at 43, and Joe fighting a very difficult style to contend with.
