Back when Hopkins fought Calzaghe there was a thread with viewpoints of how that fight would go, with a number of very close predictions: http://www.eastsideboxing.com/forum/showthread.php?t=56460&page=2 I'd be interested to hear how posters see Mayweather/Cotto going. Any predictions?
Floyd will win, most likely by a decision. Let's face it, Cotto isn't even the best junior middle in the world. Martinez is, and I'd say second best is Canelo Alvarez, who I think would stop Cotto. So to me the question is whether Floyd is better than the 3rd best jr. middle in the world, and the answer is yes. Pac already soundly beat Cotto. So what if Floyd beats him now? Big deal. Cotto is too short, does not throw often enough or enough combinations, pretty much has a left only, doesn't take the greatest shot ever, and stands fairly square. Although Cotto has some good footwork and a good left and some pop and speed, he fights cautious like Floyd for the most part, though he isn't quite as fast or as skillful as Floyd, and he does not have the same level of defense as Floyd. Only thing Cotto does better is punch, but Floyd usually fixes it so that you can't find much to hit very often. Cotto may try a few things and try to sharp-shoot some good crisp lefts and a combo here and there move around and make a color-able attempt to box and make Floyd come to him, and perhaps get some respect with some hard hooks, which might initially frustrate Floyd a bit early on, but at the end of the day I think Cotto is going to come up short of doing what he needs to do to win the bout. Might be interesting and tactical, but that does not make me eager enough to see it to pay for it on PPV.
I believe that some of the things Cotto does well will bother Mayweather for about 5-6 rounds. I wouldnt be suprised if Floyd gets hit more than he usually does. Miguel doesnt load up one or two big shots but he throws short punches and puts together nice combinations. I think Cotto can work the body and shift to the head to creat openings under/over over/under. Cotto is also very experianced. With that said Floyd Mayweather is the better boxer and he will dominate the second half of the bout I think it will got the distance. 8-4 Mayweather maybe 7-5. I am wondering when/if Ringrust will ever become a problem for Mayweather if an opponent can push the pace and make him punch for 3 minutes instead of whenever he wants to. Make the guy uncomfortable.
I look for Mayweather to take a UD. Mayweather has more options on how to approach the fight and Cotto definitely has to press the action. Mayweather's economical punch output will overcome Cotto's workrate due to defense, timing, and footwork. Look for Mayweather to have Cotto's jab and timing down by round three. If Mayweather chooses to open up the last two rounds he will stop Cotto. 10 to 2 in rounds for Mayweather or TKO 11.
Cotto has just never been in Floyd's class and he's not even a big Welter never mind 154'lber. If Floyd struggles here he should retire or cash in quick against Manny.
As much as I hope you are wrong, you are most likely correct. An old, shot Mosely made things interesting for a couple rounds. Maybe Cotto can find the fire of old... but I ain't gonna pay 50 dollars to hope to see this far-fetched possibility.
More importantly than the thread topic..your avatar is great..one of the most impressive performances I've ever seen by Senor Gomez...oh, excuse me..Mayweather -Cotto...I despise the **** stain, but he'll easily defeat a spent Cotto..by a late, bloody tko.
I will take a shutout for PBF 120-108 and I wouldn't rule out the possibility of him stopping cotto. I like Cotto and while I respect Floyd I don't really even like him a little bit...Cotto is just overmatched here.
I think Cotto will do better than most expect. It's not like Floyd's beaten guys that were really any better than Cotto, and I think Miguel can implement the right kind of gameplan to take a few rounds here and there. Still, as lora says, he's just not in Floyd's class, which is fairly plain to see. Barring cuts, I also see him lasting the distance, though things will likely get rough for him in the final 2 or 3 rounds as he begins to fade and Floyd comes on strong. Mayweather 8-4 type decision. A few competitive rounds going Cotto's way, Mayweather taking the majority of them though and winning his more decisively.
Mayweather by wide UD. The speed disparity is large, and while Cotto is a good boxer, he's a basic one, and the feet are in different classes. Floyd is just the dynamic, more skilled guy, and I don't think the size disparity is all the great. Floyd will sharpshoot his way to victory, and Cotto's jab will keep it competitive if he throws it consistently.
I think it all depends on Cotto's stamina. I have never really trusted Cottos stamina. But if it can hold up, I trust that Cotto can pull it off.
Cotto will have good momemnts early, because every FMJ opponent always has moments early. Name a fighter that win rounds versus FMJ in the latter rounds of a fight? Early in fights FMJ is always plotting, planning and thinking. Should be even three-rounds each going into the 7th....then it should be a blow-out after that. FMJ could and has the ability to finish every fighter he has faced. But FMJ always plays-it-safe. 9-3 UD FMJ.
