Ok, enough sarcam with McVey. Solis, Adamek, Valuev, and Haye all declined to fight Vitali. He's done everything but beg them to get into the ring, they are just not intersted. Vitali and Boystov are in the same camp, their trainer has stated he will not let them fight understandably. Boystov is being groomed to break out when Vitali retires. Povetkin was Wlad's mandatory but Atlas managed to drag him out of the rankings. Not sure Chambers is on the market since his loss to Wlad, been MIA. Chagaev and Dimitrenko...I don't know. Guess wouldn't hurt for Vitali to offer. One is sitting on mandatory with Haye, the other is rebuilding. I think Thompson is the only guy getting the shaft. One of Wlad's hardest fights and he's been doing everything he can to fight another contender and get another title shot.
All of the men I mentioned above are more qualifed for a title shot than Shannon Briggs. True or False?
Haye was the only worthy challenger, he wouldnt fight. The rest are fairly unknown or no hopers. Personally I would pick Briggs and Tua over the Johnsons and Adamek level fighters just because they are punching threats and "could" possibly put Vitali into a situation that we know hes vulnerable to, and thats getting pressured and hit hard. Id rather see him face Evander Holyfield than anyone else. Shows you how much respect I have for todays heavies.
Provided Vitali did give old man Holy a title shot, it might be his hardest fight since Lewis turned his grill into a hamburger back in '03. Shows you how **** poor todays heavyweight division is. Ensure you tell us if he uses them. I'm going to be optimistic & pray that Briggs can pull this off, to end Vitali's 'Reign of Boredom'.
This content is protected This content is protected This content is protected This content is protected This content is protected This content is protected Spin what? Where did I say this was a great match? The blind patriotism attached to Haye is astounding! Haye won’t fight either Kltischko, and that is what the fans want. Haye would easily make more money here, yet he talks, and then balks. In fact Haye won’t even fight Chagaev! Harrison is a horrible pick. At least Briggs is a former name, who won a belt 4 years ago, and has not been stopped for a long, long time. The difference here is twofold. Vitali is seeking out the top fighters for his title shot. Haye, Valuev, and Solis all said no thanks. Adamek needs to recover, and would prove to be no match. The rest of the top ten were pretty muc beaten by Wlad or Vitali. So Vitali has to settle for Briggs. With Haye, he is rejecting the offers from the top fighters by design, and going for a never was. Can you see the difference here? Briggs > Harrison in terms of accomplishments, name recognition, and upset ability. I would rather have Haye or Valuev, but they want no part of Vitali. At least Briggs is willing to meet Vitali the ring, and let’s not pretend there is no risk in this fight. Briggs can punch, and judging on his recent outings seems durable. As long as a champ stays active and fights the guys who are willing to meet him, what more can you ask of him?
Recent outings? LMAO. He took a 2 1/2 year layoff after 2007 then fought only 3 times since, all against tomato cans!
Briggs can punch period. 3 first round Ko's is not easy to do vs. journeyman. Keep in mind he Ko'd Lyachovich, and Mercer, and took the in clean punches from Ibragimov who can hit. I don't view Briggs as a top ten guy, but I do think he has a better chance than most of them. Again, with Haye, Valuev, Povetkin, Solis and others saying no thanks, this is what we get. At least Vitali is being an active champion making offers. What more can we ask?
Where boxing is concerned I ALLWAYS root for the best man, patriotism has nothing to do with it, blind or otherwise. I castigate Haye for fighting Harrison ,and Klitschko for fighting a washed up 39 year old, once retired Briggs, who was last relevant 13 years ago. Both matches are inexcusable. Briggs last opponent was Rob Calloway who had won 2 of his last 7 fights, Calloway was stopped by your " never was " , Harrison 6 years ago , Harrison broke his jaw. Calloway is 41years old. Dominique Alexander was Brigg's previous opponent he had 3 wins out of his last 8 fights all his 5 losses were by ko, none went over 5 rds. Rafael Pedro was Brigg's opposition, prior to that , Pedro had won 1 of his last 5 fights Wins over these mighty Tigers, are enough for you to assert that Briggs seems durable? Briggs only 2009 bout was a 1 rd blowout of 39 year old Marcus McGhee who came in with 2 wins out of his last 7 bouts. Briggs win was changed to a no contest after Briggs tested positive for illegal substances [he has added over 50lbs to his frame since he scraped a majority dec from George Foreman]. To capsule , in the last 2 years Briggs has had 4 fights which lasted a total of under 4 rounds. Did any of these tomato cans actually hit him? More relevant, are "wins" over this pathetic crew, enough to gain a man a title shot?
Would you agree, this is probably the biggest puncher hes faced outside of Lewis? If I was training Briggs, I would have him fight the exact fight Lewis did. I would think an older Vitali might even breakdown quicker, so I would have Briggs brawling in the gym for 5-6 round gym fights. Prepare him for that type of fight, and then send him out after Vitali. We all know hes not going to outbox him, so thats what you do with Briggs. His trainer is an idiot though, he'll train Briggs to box which will clearly be a no win situation.
Vitlai has faced some good punchers. Lewis, Sanders, Hide, Peter, and Williams come to mind. I think Briggs would rate about 3rd in the group. No doubt he can hit. I do find the " there is no way Briggs can outbox Vitali " a bit odd comming from you. You said Vitali lacks talent but makes up for it by being in shape in the Vitali vs Bowe thread. Areolla, who is much younger and quicker tried to attack Vitlai. He took a pasting. No way Briggs has that type of stamina. Few do. Vitali will easily move, box, land, and counter. Once Briggs shows weakness, Vitali will move in for the finish. Briggs is going to try to cover up and conserve his energy, with the hope that a few hard shots wins it for him. He wont win by boxing or forcing trades. All fighters can talk they are going to come out blazing, but as soon as they get caught flush, they change their minds. The press conference here will be great, but remind Briggs ( who reads message forums by the way ) the worst thing to be in boxing is out of gas vs. a puncher. Tell Shannon not to disgrace himself by fouling here when he needs a break, or use excuses in the post fight. I will give Briggs some credit though; he got more guts that Haye, Povetkin, or Valuev.
Vitali is a very good boxer, hes a horrible fighter. It's Briggs only chance to turn the fight into a barnburner. You people misread and take all my posts the wrong way. Ive been reclarifying my positions in threads all day today. :huh I think Briggs righthand trumps all those fighters you mentioned in the power department besides Lewis.
I want to start out by saying when it come to boxing, I think you know your stuff, even though I do sense a tad of geographical bias in your posts from time to time. You are giving a mixed message. First you say Vitali is a very good boxer. I agree. Then you say he's a horrible fighter? Horrible fighters do not ascend to Ring Magazine Champion, or come back after injuries, and 4 years out of the the ring to reclaim their belts at age 37. Please explain how Vitali is a horrible fighter? Briggs has produced some big time KO's. He might be the 2nd best puncher Vitali has faced. Its is hard to say. Rhaman, who has been in the ring with Lewis, Tua, and others said Corrie Sanders was the best puncher he ever fought. Who said Briggs was the best puncher he ever fought? Briggs doesn't have the conditioning to turn the fight into a bran burner. Like most heavies he will gas out quickly. Besides, Vitali can box, move and deliver a high out put punch for 12 rounds. By going for it early, Briggs is begging to get his own chin checked, and won't have cards to play in the mid to late rounds. Briggs best shot is to fight in spurts, which I predict is exactly what he will do. Fighters BS themselves too much. Briggs will think if I can just stay strong and land a good one, I can win like I defeated Lyachovich in the 12th round. Vitali has a great chin, and is hard to hit. If he had to, I think he could take Briggs' best and weather the strom. I am interested in the stare down, and opening round. Very interested. Vitali can intimidate people during a stare down. Will Briggs show bravo early? Maybe, but once he gets hit hard or uses up his energy, I think his chances are going to decrease.
