https://streamable.com/5n19 Too much running and not enough action for some people, but this is one of the performances that I admire the most. Shows how in the right circumstances, a skilled boxer can use his footspeed/footwork advantage to overcome any number of other serious disadvantages. Completely nullified Arguello's dangerous offensive weapons and left him chasing air and eating sneaky ambush punches.
I think Arguello would have been a bit susceptible to ATG speed machines. A guy like Whitaker at 135 would have been very very awkward. He was very potent but a teeny bit methodical and stiff and not the fastest. The 15 round fight distance definitely suits him as he can wear his man down and put plenty of pressure on to the body.
I think he would have beaten Kenty by stoppage for sure. I don't think Hilmer was near as good as once thought.
A Jimmy Young type performance by Fernandez...and i enjoyed this fight too KK,...as I always enjoy tricky, sneaky type fighters winning over puncher types. I vicariously experience what it's like to outsmart the big bombers.
I'd have to see the whole fight to make a judgment. In this clip, I wouldn't say Fernandez is "running." He is moving well, changing direction, using great movement. Arguello looks very slow footed and is not cutting off the ring at all.
I think Whitaker would most likely have been too slick for him. He may have caught Pernell with a straight right and hurt him but the odds are Whitaker would win an uneventful decision.
I think Arguello had a style that , along with the fact he was slowfooted, made him susceptable to slick boxers. He was very patient and rarely pressed the attack agressively. He did not cut off the ring well. He came forward, but in a languid way. For example if he was more aggressive and applied heavier pressure he could have cut the ring off better against Fernandez. Duran and Chavez, for example, cut the ring off better. There was a bit more urgency to their aggression.
