Juan LaPorte is on record saying Chava was the best he ever fought. And he also fought Chavez and Pedroza.
Fantastic matchup. I'd take Sanchez in a close one. But Saldivar is one of the most underrated greats in history.
Vicente Saldivar takes this one for me! Not much between the guys for my money in terms of FW ranking or h2h but I have Saldivar edging ahead of the more celebrated Sanchez in both. But this would be a close fight that would need 3-4 fights to give us a clear winner/answer.
It would be interesting to see how Sanchez deals with a southpaw. Escobar, who held him to that draw that everyone agreed Sal actually lost, was also a lefty. Not sure if anything can really be drawn from that, but it's an interesting question. Then again, I think Saldivar squared himself up so much in his stance that I'm not sure being a left-hander could really have been a factor in his style. Never mind.
I'm forcing myself to get off the fence and make a pick....and I see Saldivar...fighting the fight of his life...edging young Sal Sanchez over 15. I don't have to tell any of my esteemed fellow fans here this, but this match up has t-r-i-l-o-g-y written all over it..and I'll elaborate on this tomorrow...
