That guys like Pazienza and Mickey Ward get movies made about them, while guys like Matthew Saad Muhammad don't just makes me shake my head. I realize the Irish American and Italian American markets are huge, but still. I'd much prefer a movie about Ray Mancini then Paz. I know Mancini got that TV movie, but there was never a big budget Holywood movie made. Imagine what a life affirming, positive message a movie about Saad Muhammad could do for young African americans living in poor ghettos. Anyway, I watched the beginning of this trailer, and I can see right away they are using Vinny's struggle to make 140 lbs. as an excuse for him losing to Roger Mayweather. Vinny had heart and it was impressive that he won a championship (even if was over a mediocrity - Gilbert Dele) after suffering the fractured vertebrae, but there are more deserving guys to get movies made about 'em. Saad is in the Hall of Fame - he was a better fighter and his story is probably more inspirational. And, my gripes are not a race thing - I am white. This is just the way I see it. And, yes, Matthew Saad Muhammad was one of my favorite fighters, but I think I can still offer some objectivity on the subject.
I remember reading some time ago about that, the guy who is going to play Tapia appeared in the law and order svu and other works.
A movie about Tapia would be awesome. Instead they'll probably make one about Oscar De La Hoya and all his "struggles." LOL
I've always thought a movie (maybe another one) of Jack Dempsey would have been interesting. The thought of riding the rails from one town to another and having to go to bars to fight for money intrigues me, as does Rickard, going up to the Yukon looking for gold and then becoming a fight promoter.
The Carlos Monzon movie really should be made....it's a mystery to me why it hasn't been made already.
Yes, I agree, a movie on Dempsey would be great. His tough early life, early fights, etc. I think there was enough mystery surrounding him that would make it really interesting. As a sports figure he was huge.
The problem with a dempsey is all that mystery, no one knows what happened really in his mind and life.
