Here we have hammer handed free-swinging (It was the late 60's, har har har) Takahasi at home in the second defense of his titles taking on tough and season German southpaw Willi Quatuor... Willi would actually end his career with nearly 80 career bouts and face other notable fighters of his time like Italian legend Bruno Arcari. Willi passed away a little over a year ago at the end of the age of 79.

Thoughts? Any of our own classic forum members recall hearing news of this result or even seeing it way back when the division was still an eccentric oddity of sorts?

That's not a bad thing! We need more literal kill or be killed kamikaze sort of fighters. They, you know... make for good match making!

Can't believe you don't like those tight inside punches he throws, McGrain... Man was a technician of his own kind in there and yet here we are!

Yeah, he was just an angry, angry man with cyborg fists basically, probably because he was part Glaswegian. The definition of unskilled, plodding but murderous dude. I rewatch him caving in Lopopolo every now and again pretending it's me and the gaffer at work, the c***.

Oh man, what kind of history do you have with this ****ing knob of a man? Give me some details, let out some steam....

And I'm not surprised Fuji was an angry dude... every watch late 60's/early 70's Japanese cinema? I'm a huge film nerd and those years are full of some of the most insane, most violent, most exploitative out of this world **** you could not believe. I think Japan had some kind of consensus cultural insanity going on for quite a while there...

The Junior Welter was kinda overlooked in that time frame...with Curtis Cokes & Jose Napoles at welter. If Carlos Ortiz had stayed up at JW, then it might have attracted more attention. The boxing mags had a lot of these type of really good fights....buried at the back of the mags.

How many of these bouts have you seen, horn? Any of em'? Or are they all mostly just results in your mind from the old mags...?

Does anyone else think hearing the Japanese trainers go "body body body" routinely throughout the bout is one of the most subtlety funny things they've heard in ages? I get a real kick out of it.

Very few tapes seen, if any. Some of the mags had an Asian or Oriental Title bout Section....with some "non-Asian" fighter going over to fight for a title against an Oriental Champ with a great record, in what was described in a short article as 'a war"....but getting a grasp on what really transpired was hard.

I hear ya'. That's both interesting and a little disappointing, being in that situation that is. What's your view on the internet and availability of fights nowadays?

Great having tapes, and more still photos, & articles from vintage newspapers at our fingertips for a 'modern" review. Many A- fighters now getting credit for what they actually accomplished. The era of limited fights on TV, due to high-priced PPV, kinda hurt the overall boxing Industry for awhile...but now things are better due to multiple ways to see many fights.
