DECEMBER 8TH AT ROBIN PARK ARENA IN LAS WIGAN

Frank Maloney was a happy man on Saturday evening when he walked away with 4 new champions in Gary Woolcombe , Chris Edwards , Jason Booth and Craig Watson who stopped the VIP fighters having a clean sweep on the evening - we finished 5 – 1 for the night :-

ALI NUUMEMBE – Our only looser of the night when the referee stopped the contest in the 9th round due to the constant bleeding of a cut above the left eye of Ali. This was caused by a head clash in the 3rd round and the corner failed to stem the bleeding which was a constant stream and hampered the performance of Ali ,who was constantly being bumped with head clashes that saw the referee speak with Watson but take no action – at the risk of being sore loosers we would question the stoppage which came as the fight was beginning to swing towards Ali who took both the 7th and 8th rounds clearly , the cut was no worse than in the 4th , 5th and 6th rounds which Watson was winning - Ali had the championship experience and it was starting to tell !!

BRIAN ROSE - Moved to 7-0 with a 3rd round stoppage win over the normally durable Sean Falmer who came to fight but was just not in the class of the former stand out English amateur who will be looking for titles in 2008 who shown he can fight as well as box.

ALEX MATTVIENKO – Had his opponent changed at the weigh inn and despite giving nearly a stone away in weight gave his normal all out attacking performance to win all the rounds ,moved to 9-0-2 and will be looking for an area belt in 2008.

GARY SYKES - The former ABA Championmoved to 7-0 with a comfortable 6 round points win over Carl Allen ,although it was not one of his better performance there was still flashes of the speedy, varied and accurate punch combinations that make Gary exciting to watch.

MARK MORAN - Another ABA champion who is finally settling down to the Pro ranks with a 2nd stoppage on the bounce, chopping his opponent in half with a great body shot in the 3rd round. Mark puts this down to a combination of moving up to Super-bantamweight and fighting regularly,he is another VIP fighter that will be competing for titles in 2008.

JACK ARNFIELD - Beat Ben Hudson on points over 4 entertaining rounds as the old stager used all his tricks to survive the non stop attacks of the 18 year old from Blackpool who is now unbeaten in 3 after turning Pro only 2 months ago.

Stegsie - do you think a rematch is likely?

Good result for Watson but I hope Nuumbembe has recovered okay - that looked like a nasty cut.

I don;t think anyone is going to live up to the last British Light Middleweight Champion, put it that way!! ;)

That being said though - Gary is a decent fighter. Only ever lost to Andrew Facey, and out of 25 contests that is a decent enough record. 10 KO's out of those 25 wins - most of them recently, suggest that his power is coming with age, so one to watch for sure.

Be interesting to see who his first defence will be against.....

I'm really pissed that he's British champion I don't feel he deserves that gr8 accolade. I think he is ok but really unexceptional in any area. How close were the board to allowing Brian Rose to fight for the title?

Can't comment on anything about the BBBoC, but can say that it will be interesting who faces Gary next.

Read an article where Woolcombe indicates his first defence will probably be in Feb/March. Mentions three names - Thomas McDonagh, Bradley Pryce, & Ryan Rhodes.

Surely you are not suggesting Woolcombe won't be holding onto that coveted belt for long ....
