I've noticed that a lot of people expect Gomez to win this despite the fact he's 35, in there with a heavy hitter, and was TKO'd by Diaz. So...
I hope the powerful Virchis wins, cause this is apparently for a shot at the next WBC titleholder ( Virchis vs. Vitali would be pretty interesting to see ). But I expect Gomez will outbox Virchis in a fairly uneventful and forgettable fight.
I still think the Diaz KO was a dive. Diaz was a close friend and countryman trying to get his career off the ground.
Gomez should win a decision as long as he gives movement. He can't afford any mental lapses in there meaning no standing in front of Virchis. He's got to let his punches go and stay out of Virchis's wheelhouse at all costs.
I hope Virchis wins. Like mentioned, Virchis - Peter/Vitali will be much more interesting than Gomez. We will see if Gomez can dance around Virchis for 12 rounds. I hope he cant. I have no doubt he goes down if Virchis connects. I think Virchis is not as slow as most think, on the other hand Gomez may have lost a step or two. That combined and bum...Virchis should be able to score a mid round or late ko.
Agreed. I think Gomez, by far, has been the most avoided heavyweight out there for a long time. It's real hard to continually bring in the "A" game when you're fighting fringe guys for chump change while waiting for a shot. And sooner or later, the avoided guy gets upset and then gets put on the sidelines some more. It's far easier to fight an old name like a Golata, etc than deal with a southpaw boxer like Gomez. It was a long long time ago when he was cruiser champ and winning all those fights & he's just stalled as a heavyweight since. But if I managed a heavyweight, a tall lanky combo punching southpaw with pedigree is the last guy I'd sign to fight too. I think he "1-2 and moves" his way to a decision & weathers a storm on his way to a victory.
Well, avoided or not, getting knocked out in the 1st round by Diaz didnt help climbing up the rankings and force some high caliber fights. He is also this kind of guy who is always involved in some kind of trouble outside the ring. Problems with women, trainers and drugs...i think that all stalled his career more than beeing avoided.
If Gomez was doing Diaz the courtesy of taking a dive, Yanqui could have taken it a little easier on him. Either way, the stoppage all stems from Gomez getting caught with a flush hook; very uncharateristic for a fighter of his caliber to get caught like that in rd1. [yt]e7cUUwIQXd4[/yt]
