Two days ago Ukranian farmer Vladimir Virchis returned to the ring after a long layoff from our beloved sport winning a wide point decision in a very lacklustre performance against known Lithuanyan journeyman Edgar Kalnars(20-18).
Virchis ' performance wasnt very convincing as he tried to hunt his prey down and decapitate it.In vain, as Kalnars was too quick on his feet and not stupid enough to mix it up with one of the most feared bangers in the business.
The ring rusty Ukranian behemoth was quite out of puff after 3-4 rounds and would hardly have been able to go more than 6 rounds in his comeback fight.
    Very poor stamina!
Anyway! The hunter is back, and his firepower is still a threat to any rival out there.
He now fights out of Germany under the banner of the Arena Box Promotion and its representative Ahmet Oener.
    Watch out,big boys!:admin
The Hunter is back! :happyVitaly Klitschko once called him a devastating banger in an interview.Vitaly knocked him out at the amateurs when they were both in their early twenties.

Saw it, and he looked slow as ****, and a bit over weight, he needs to move fast if hes gonna do anything, the power may or may not still be there, did not really hurt the other guy, who in the end came on strong imo

More then a little irritated he sat on his hands with his thumbs up his ass for so long.

Over a year of inactivity after losing to a Cruiserweight. You'd think looking at his time out of the ring that he was in some epic ringwar along the lines of Vasqurez/Marquez.

Oh well, more wasted potential in the boxing game. Soon he won't be almost losing to the likes of Sprott, he'll just flat out lose.

I was surprised when he bowed out but I don't take much away from him for losing to Gomez. Gomez is a tricky, tricky fighter and now Gomez is and was a valid HW in my opinion. A little extra weight but even if he lost it he'd be an HW these days, not a cruiser. Gomez did, afterall, work himself into a WBC title fight at HW. Gomez was a heavyweight for four years when he fought Virchis.

    Good points,mate!

Moreover,Virchis has never looked good against a tricky and speedy mover. He needs a stationary target in front of his fists.
Gomez' style was totally wrong for him!
Sprott and Bidenko made the water hot for him, too.
Nevertheless,I am positive that he would give hell to slower fighters like Sam Peter,David Tua,Sinan Samil Sam,or...............the Russian behemoth Valuev.
Once he connects with one of his murderous punches, you are out of the game!
I am quite happy that he has signed a contract with Arena Box Promotion. Its representative head Oener doesnt have the best reputation out there, but he has matched his boys very toughly up to now( Gamboa,Solis had to face Mazikin his second pro fight,Aurich took on Danny Williams in his 10th pro fight, and so on).
Whats more he doesnt hesitate to spend some good bucks on recognisable names.
Admittingly,Virchis is totally out of shape and needs some months to be able to hunt down a fast pedestrian, but he hasnt lost his impressive firepower which is a serious threat to any heavy out there.

Gomez was the wrong opponent for him, the worst matchup from a stylistic point of view. Peter, Arreola, Toney or Rahman all would've been better choices. Gomez is too skilled for him.

Wrong "opponent"? What's this about a wrong "opponent"? That was a Mandatory Eliminator...Gomez was NO "opponent".
At some point in the game you're going to have to step up and fight somebody that isn't exactly tailor made for you, if you can't succeed at that then you're not going to move up to the next level. Virchis is a good B- fighter, nothing more and he's been sliding with age for some time.

When you're a contender, you have no obligation to fight any specific opponent. What's wrong with fighting other contenders that you match up well with? If you're ducking opponent as a champion, that's a different story of course...

Well, lets be honest Virchis is a totally out of shape part time farmer with very limited skills who is as fast as a lame turtle. What makes him so interesting to watch is his firepower which can end any fight any time.
Carefully matched and with a powerful promoter behind his back he can still make some noise at the big boys' league. I can be wrong of course.
Sam Peter is still considered to be a decent heavy by lots of fans and experts around the globe.Does he have more talent than Virchis? No! Does he have more firepower than Virchis? No!
Thats why I for one am glad that he gives it another try!

Chris, what's wrong with it is that the ABC organization either orders the match-up or is at the liberty to approve/deny it, so they can't just fight ANYBODY.

Odo, lets hope then that Peter and Virchis get it on and see how it ends up. We could use another Ibeabuchi-Tua type of fight to make things exciting.

lol i'v always wanted this matchup, especially after the Maskaev fight when people acted like Peter was Shavers or Tyson. Virchis would brutally KO Sam and i'd love to see it. Hype vs raw power

I also think that a Virchis with no stamina issues would decapitate Sam Peter if they ever fought each other.
Peter was nothing special at the amateurs at all.Vidoz beat him and kicked him out of the olympic tournament. The same Vidoz who was brutally knocked out of Virchis.
Peter didnt even dare to cross Povetkin's shadow then.
The African can punch, and so can Virchis. However,Virchis is bigger and would be very happy to have a stationary target in front of his fists.
Virchis by ko IMO.Of course the present-totally out of shape version of Virchis would need a couple of months in order to be ready for Sam Peter.
