For the first time, rival Hamburg promoters arena Box-Promotion and Universum Box-Promotion will directly clash when #2 Juan Carlos Gomez steps into the ring with #1 Vladimir Virchis in a "final eliminator" for the WBC heavyweight championship, which was announced by WBC President Jose Sulaiman in Manila today. The winner will get the chance to challenge the reigning World Champion by the middle of 2008. Before that Samuel Peter and Oleg Maskaev will fight on February 2nd, then the winner has to defend the title against "champion emeritus" Vitali Klitschko. After that, the Gomez-Virchis winner will get his shot. "That's the chance I've been waiting for," said Gomez. "I'm gonna prove to the world that I am the real champion. First I'll take out Virchis and then I can finally go for the Klitschkos. It's Showtime!" Manager Ahmet Öner added, "Now we got Juan exactly where we wanted him. He could be arena's first world champion. Now we're in for big business!"

Gomez is waster and a wannabe playboy. It will be good to see him KO`ed again the same way Yanqui Diaz flattened him.

Those WBC boys and Suliaman sure believe in planning ahead, as they've got the next years' schedule, all laid out, for whomever is the titleholder in this sorted affair. I would not be surprised for Suliaman go ahead and start yet another eliminator to see who fights the winner of Vichis /Gomez, who will fight the winner of Vitali and the winner of Peter/Maskaev. LOL THis is getting to be so complex, you need a big chart with pushpins to keep it all straight. Its like a big family tree.

I think McCall must be regretting fighting Gomez, to say the least. He was already the mandatory, and took a voluntary fight, and PFOOOOT, gone.

Virchis has the power to destroy Gomez, but Gomez is no pushover. He's a decent boxer, in my opinion.

Its time for the big Ukranian Vladimir Virchis to see if he can prove himself, after his last attempt, where he failed to beat Chagaev. He now has another chance to step on the world stage and see if he can deliver his freakish power to Gomez.

    Virchis by late TKO.

the WBC are acting like clowns with the HW situation, and more importantly, if you're a WBC don't you have to defend your title at least once every 12 months? when was the last time that rusty old **** oleg was in the ring?

I hope that Virchis KO's him, but to be neutral and fair, I think Gomez stands a good chance at winning a pretty boring UD.

Gomez only went to heavy because he was too fat and lazy to make 190.If anything his still a cruiser and should be making 200 if he took his trade seriously. But he prefers to spend his time in the limelight and partying away like a playboy.Even if he won he would be a VERY boring heavyweight champ.

    Most definitely, I agree 100%.
And you know, as well as me.. that we can see a good path for Gomez to be that WBC heavyweight champ.. go through Virchis and Peter, that suits him, because they're slow and strong.. he's pretty slick and talented, but not elite.. this is the "Tailor made way" for him, unfortunately. :-(

God help us if we are looking at the future with Gomez as the WBC belt-holder. :-( He'll probably hold it hostage with Öhner.

Great news, another big fight, at least none of them will get his shot without earning it.

Gomez is the better boxer so Virchis will need to hurt him to win this one.

Gomez on points here. Just a bad matchup for Virchis. He'll be wary of Virchis' power, and will be running and potshotting all fight to a victory. I'd pick Virchis to beat a lot of the top heavies, but I'm not confident that he can handle Gomez's speed, and Gomez won't allow himself to get caught like he did against Diaz when fighting someone who's known for his power.

    I think that's a GREAT match-up.

Virchis is around 10, I agree with the RING even if some people here inexplicably like DImitrenko better ( ever seen them fight?) .

Gomez has no chin, if Virchis nails him it will be the KO of the year but I like Gomez a lot, he just had one horrible loss, looked good or ok in all his other bouts, I think he will KO Virchis relatively early.

    Gomez KO3.
