It is official.Virchis(23-1) will square off against teak tough American journeyman Robert Hawkins(23-9) on the undercard of Dimitrenko vs Hoffman.
Virchis outpointed Paolo Vidoz over 12 rounds in his last outing to a ring, and Hawkins scored an upset victory over Terry Smith(30-3) in his last fight.
Virchis only loss was a split decision defeat against his stable mate Ruslan Chagaev.
Virchis has relinquished his european title in the meantime.
His name has been mentioned as one of Wlad's possible opponents for his next fight.
Makes me think why he is scheduled to face Hawkins on the undercard of Dimitrenko vs Hoffman.Virchis ' last test before he gets a shot at Wlad's title?

I'm disapointed in this opponnent. Virchis is past the level of fighting Robert Hawkins.

Me too. It seems like Virchis going backwards in competition. What the f*ck is wrong with his promoter???

I would have thought so, too.

But maybe they were having trouble getting Virchis a fight with someone more on his level.

I would like to see Virchis fight someone like Briggs.

Very strange choice of opponent and possibly riskier than it appears. Hawkins has a very good chin and has lasted with likes of Tua and Peter. Virchis would have to be overwhelmingly expected to win this which poses the question: what does it gain him to waste precious time at 34 with an opponent with little upside to defeating?

I guess this must be one of those get some rounds and stay busy type of fights. Hawkins will definitely give him some rounds but Virchis better be prepared to go the distance and win rounds on aggression and style. But if he has a grueling type of fight or he gets knicked a bit he could be well into 2008 before we see him again.

Hawkins may have been the only candidiate available for that particular date. Then again, he might have been the only man willing to work for that amount of money. In boxing there are an endless number of complications.

virchis has a bad technique and lacks of stamina. he has some power but is not world class. against wlad he would eat jabs and get knocked out in the middle or late rounds.

I think it was Vitali Klitschko who said Virchis had the most power he had ever felt.

That is because he has had a very well managed career.

Well,I guess Virchis thinks the same about Vitaly as Vitaly was the one who knocked Virchis out at the amateurs and not the other way round.

After the trouble he had with sprott, I struggle to see why they chose someone like Hawkins.
Virchis is to raw and cumbersome to be taking on an awkward guy like hawkins in a fight with little reward.

Baffling but if he stops him thats pretty impressive.

Virchis sure is a big heavyweight who must have amazing power.

But lately, in his more recent fights, he appears to have intentionally lost alot of that excess muscle mass.

    Nice pics!

Virchis is a truly huge fellow who shouldnt be matched against any decent mobile opponent.
He looked horrible against both Bidenko and Sprott.
However, whoever remains inmobile in front of his fists is doomed or must have an outstanding chin to cope with that limited but murderous banger.
