two long time champions at light heavy
both of whom were great fighters
but in both cases it was not clear if they were actually the
    light heavyweight of his day

    hill didnt really unify

    with gus
certain guys didnt get title shots

    anyways who wins?

Gus Lesnevich would have beaten Virgil Hill. He fought in a much tougher era.Much tougher. He also beat heavyweights. Was he the best LH of his time ? Nope, as there was some chap fighting at the same time named ,
    EZZARD CHARLES...

Hard to say. Hill has the height, jab, and footspeed over Lesnevich, and that might be enough to carry him to victory. Billy Conn and Joey Maxim both used similar attributes to beat Lesnevich, although Gus was reportedly competitive with both of them (and he was likely fading by the time he fought Maxim).

yeah hill does have jab-reach to win

but i think gus is a better inside fighter and probably has more tricks

but hill has better footwork hard to pick

i think the type of ref
you have would played a big part in the match

    http://boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?human_id=479&cat=boxer

    go throught his record
fought the best americans and europeans at both light heavy and later at
    cruise

guys like tizzo, jones, dariusz m,henry maske etc
would be tough oppenents for a fighter in any era
