were they better than rjj , griffin , tarver , toney , harding , devalle , woods , reggie johnson , glen johnson ? no .
not 2 mention that d pre "charles" era was about as good if not better .
and then d spinks&3 muhammads was much better .
conteh fought in d leftovers era of d desert that was b4 him , it was still a desert .

Hill is underrated. A guy with 25 title defenses in his career. Regardless of people saying he didn't have good opposition, most guys cannot beat even half the guys he did in title fights. If Virgil could hit a guy with a jab, he could pepper them and land his counter hook and win decisions. I do agree his right hand was nonexistent. For such a great fighter, his right hand was terrible.

Hill is one of those fighters that I respect for his longevity and consistency but he never proved to be truly great in any aspect. The majority of opponents that he beat, although with admirable consistency, were not top of the class. Against his best opponents he wound up on the losing end.

Conteh was more exceptional even if for a shorter amount of time. At their relative bests, Conteh's better left jab dictates the fight much the way Thomas Hearns's did. If Hill couldn't outjab you, he didn't have a whole lot to offer.

Perhaps too baised, but Conteh mid to late rounds stoppage.

Somebody mentioned Conteh's headwork, Chris Finneghan after the second fight had no qualms whatsoever with Conteh - by his own admission had tried the same and acknowledged that Conteh had the tougher nut ( ie , Conteh didn't do anything he had already tried - respect Chris )

To my knowledge, the 2 best eras of lightheavies in the modern era are the pre Charles era that you mentioned and the mid to late 70s to mid 80s group that you mentioned also. The latter is the era that I was referring to.The Saad,Spinks,Braxton,Mustafa Muhammed,Lopez,Galindez era is definitely better than the era you mentioned above.I mentioned RJJ in reference to Hill because he's the best lightheavy that Hill ever fought, and Jones stopped him in 4 on a body shot.Hill's resume has longevity but that's about it.Had Hill fought throughout the mid 70s to mid 80s era mentioned previously,he would have been an afterthought.
