Not really. Hunter isn't a good trainer for someone with Kovalevs style, plus there would very clearly be a conflict of interest. Kovalev would be better off staying with JDJ or returning to Sanchez, even Roach would be a better choice.
It's not going to matter who's training him if he's not going to listen. Abel unleashes his inner promoter and and talks a lot of fluff, but if the talk of Kovalev being too stubborn is coming from him, JDJ, and other sources, there's probably something to it.
It's been seen multiple times. Kovalev doesn't respect Jackson or for that matter anyone on his team. In both Ward fights Kovalev kept ignoring Jackson's instructions. Kovalev seems to be uncoachable. Kovalev doesn't like switching it up, which is why he was very predictable in the second fight. Jackson was begging Kovalev to throw a left hook and Kovalev didn't even try.
When plan A usually works as well as it did, it's easy to get arrogant about bothering with a plan B. See also: Foreman's 1st career
Old dogs dont learn new tricks. Kovalev is no young lion anymore, it doesnt matter who trains him, he's what he is, and he's late to change it.
Firstly it's more Ward being the talent he is as opposed to Hunter being a great trainer. ...a bit like Calzaghe and his dad. Secondly Hunter isn't right for Kovalev, I think we've seen the best of Kovalev and as a fan I enjoyed the ride but at 34 I don't see him improving but he still is top 3 to 5 in the division. I can see him fighting only a couple of more times then retirement. As for trainer I always thought Roach would be perfect for him buy JDJ is a top trainer imo.
Seems to be a Chad Dawson type, Dawson was one of my favorite boxers but quite frankly, he was hell to coach, He went through Eddie Muhammad, Dan Birmingham, Floyd Sr. Manny Steward, Ice Man Scully, and all had the same thing to say, he doesn't listen. Kovalev seems to be that type.
This would be a terrible idea for Sergey. Virgil Hunter may be the one trainer who would actually make Kovalev even worse.
I agree. I really liked Dawson under Mayweather Sr. but, unfortunately, that relationship didn't last too long.
