He guided Chad Dawson to his first title when he beat Adamek & he was in Ricky Hatton's corner when he stopped Malignaggi.
at some point its conventional for some boxers to switch in the example you gave, but i know tons that dont because they feel loyalty or they are just comfortable with the person thats always been there if they are winning. most people only switch trainers if they are coming off losses , not trying to make some calculated decision for down the road
The problem is the majority of fighters don't stay undefeated for their careers. When you talk about the top tier guys, most of them have switched trainers. Manny went to Roach, Floyd went back and forth with his father and Uncle, Nonito and Maidana train with Garcia now, Khan and DLH made several switches, etc. Now there are some who are trained by their fathers (i.e. Guerrero, Garcia,) or father figures (i.e. Ward-Virgil,) who won't change trainers due to loyalty, but when a title holder has a loss or a few losses, they usually look to gain new wisdom from a new voice in their corner. I'm sure if Broner loses again, he'll be switching trainers soon.
Dawson was already a top 10 ranked guy at 21-0 when Mayweather SR trained him for all of 2 fights. training hatton after 40 something pro fights counts as something? he is about as over rated for training floyd as kevin rooney is for training tyson. this is purely an example of the fighter making the trainer
its a forum, thats why im asking a question. im not professing to be a boxing encyclopedia. emannuel steward is 1 of the GOAT. who else?
All of his current new fighters were taken in after setback... And none have showed any significant improvement in the ring
With Khan the roach style is just not going to take him to the next level. He has gone as far as he can relying purely on his speed but he needs more now. He looked bad against diaz because he is trying to add new skills but fighters normally do this against lower tier fighters. I think khan should spend all his time working on his skills and fight a couple of low level fights to rebuild himself properly. It will be very interesting to see him fight again as I think he has been working pretty consistently in the gym since his last fight.
Agree a lot of the Hunter hype comes from him training Ward, Yes he has done a good job their with 1 fighter doesn't mean he is a great trainer though. I think Ward is so technically gifted that almost anyone half decent could train him and he becomes a champion, Now of course Khan or Angulo is nowhere near Ward level so Virgil can't be expected to turn them into a p4p fighter. But since Khan went with him he has gone backwards, Virgil isn't using Khan's best assets he is trying to turn a 27 year old into something he will never be, He is trying to get Khan to box like Ward when that isn't what he is good at. Virgil to me has been shown to only train fighters one way, he isn't able to adapt and train fighters different based on their style or assets.
If hunter can't improve them why not at least come up with a dedicated game plan? Show some tactical acumen.
