Virgil Hunter's padwork style

My belief is that, the way Virgil Hunter works his mitts has a direct correlation to Angulo's sluggish punching. Hunter's mitt work, which is very similar to Roger Mayweather's routine, diminishes a fighter's pop and power. The mitt style they both use is only effective for reflexes and getting a sense of rhythm. This was something seen in Amir Khan's last performance against Julio Diaz. If you take a closer look, and compare his last fight with the fight against Danny Garcia, Khan's punching power, pop, and sharpness was much more effective in the Garcia fight.

However, I am not insinuating Virgil Hunter is a bad coach at all. He is a good mentor, he knows how to motivate his fighters, he's a strategist, however, I feel if he changes his mittwork style, he can get more out of his fighters.

100% bro, it teaches you to be lazy, the best padwork is the classic style where you have to punch hard with every shot, just like in a fight, roger mayweather and virgils style will create bad habits and muscle memory

Mitts have nothing to do with power, you can not build up your power or lose it on mitts.

how you hits the mitts is exactly how you fight, and how hard you can punch its the most important aspect of training, that u work on from a young kid through ur whole career

I dont want to load up on another poster , but the above is absolutely correct and the original poster has obviously never done pads , for me its the most important discipline after sparring. It allows you to deliver powerful shots at a small target and from different angles.

    peace.

Lol what the **** are you talking about its PADS are more technique than power, for increasing power you use heavy bag.
It sure is most important alongside sparring but it aint done for PUNCHING POWER or as i state can not diminish your power.

I wonder where did you two train, where you use mitts for power, technique, speed, angles yes power NO, yes you can deliver power punches but its not power work out at all.

:patsch u have clearly never boxed, pads is for power and technique, it's what they teach you in every gym in the world u have to hit them hard, how you hit them is exactly how you fight and how hard u punch idiot, take it from something who knows a thing or two about boxing

technique is power also! the better the technique the harder the shot!

Ease up a little there Greenlad.

There is a point the other guy makes that is quite relevant. A heavy bag is good for developing better power.

Hand mitts are great for hitting a smaller target at speed.

Both power and accuracy can be trained through mitt work, but accuracy and correct technique is the primary aim of doing pad-work.

If mitts were only about power,,,,,,,well there is always the heavy bag, and that would solve the need for a trainer getting his hands fked up after he had held the mitts for 20 heavyweights a night:thumbsup:deal at club time:hey

Ok the heavy bag doesnt help your confidence and allows you to work to maximum power , but it doesnt allow you to hone that power and create power in small targets.

If anything i use the heavy bag for fitness as much as power , where are the pads are a mixture of accuracy and power.

And we all know Ward and Floyd are full of bad habits:oops:
Khan has no ring IQ and can fight only one style so Virgil will not be able to do much for him, Angulo was always limited and always will be.

Manny Stewart made a good point in that he thought the flashy pad work gave poor technique and didn't encourage a boxer to punch through.
