Interesting fight. I'm leaning Hill to win via decision. The way to combat Calzaghe's blistering hand speed and combination punching is with a great jab and Hill had one of the best jabs ever. I could see him using is jab and lateral movement to disrupt Joe's timing. Although feel like Calzaghe was the superior fighter to Ottke, I always felt like Ottke would have given him a rough fight because of his movement and decent jab. Movement could trouble Joe. He was at his best agaisnt punchers that needed to set their feet. Hill would not do that.
If you opened this in General, Calz's legion of fan boys would all pick him, but the true answer is Hill. He was just a lot better at 175 than Joe was. Hill's quickness and jab would be a big problem for Joe, and Hill had really deceptive power in his left hook, and could stun Calz if Joe got reckless. I see Hill's jab and movement controlling the fight.
Virgil by close UD or split in a rather boring 12 round fight. These guys could fight 5 times and it would be the same each time
I am certainly no Calzaghe fan, but I am of the position that Hill was/is overrated. Calzaghe all day but it goes the distance.
I would lean towards Virgil to win a decision as he was more proven at 175. This would probably be a non action fight though.
I think being a southpaw would effect Virgils jab as it does most everyone who tries to employ a jab against a southpaw. BUT I'm not so sure how JC would deal with Virgils tremedous footspeed- he could really move and he could do it all fight. Very interesting match-up I'm going to have think about this further.
I dont think it's even close. Calzaghe wins 10 or 11 rounds on speed, versatility and footwork. He would constantly be where he wanted to be and where Virg didn't want him to be. Three punches to one, increasingly harder as the rounds progressed. You can't teach what Joe had and you sure as hell can't beat it with what Virgil had.
