Roy Jones fought something like NINETEEN past, present or future world champions. Not even counting "champions" of meaningless belts like the WBOgus.
When the other guy is in his 40's who has been retired for 5 years, it just becomes pathetic. If Vitali wanted to prove he was better than Lennox he had 2 options: 1) Step up his competition level sooner so he could have fought prime Lennox 2) Unify the titles like Lennox did, and try to hold the Undisputed Championship longer than Lennox did Even if he had won the first fight it wouldn't have proven he was better than Lennox, only that he was better than a 37 year old, inactive and out-of-shape Lennox. A fight now proved approximately zero.
You know why? Because there are like 55 belts now. Roy's resume compared to other legit ATG's is a farce. When John Ruiz is one of your career highlight wins your resume is garbage. How many linear, unified, or undisputed champions did Glass Jaw Roy beat? Hell, how many did he even fight for that matter?
Like I said, that is only counting World champions of the WBA, WBC or IBF. Roy beat a few fighters who were top-5 P4P when he fought them, and Toney who was #1 P4P at the time.
I asked you how many linear, unified, or undisputed Champions Glass Jaw Roy fought? P4P is nothing but fantasy. When they say SRR beat X amount of former Champions they were the LEGIT champion not some paper title holder like in Roy's case.
He went for the option available and best for him as an up and comer and the WBO title was that option, not Lewis. Going for Lewis when he's still rising and down on the rankings doesn't seem logical, don't even think team Lewis will give a damn. About not chasing Lewis at 37, I think it's pretty clear what Lewis was obligated with. A rematch with Rahman and a megafight with Tyson are far more important for Lewis than paying attention to Vitali who lost to Byrd at that point and was haunted by that loss. Even after that fight with Tyson it was Wladimir who was supposed to fight Lewis but it never happened because Sanders beat him, it was more a case of luck with Johnson pulling out that Vitali ended up in the ring with him on a week notice. If he accepted it on a week notice I don't see why he wouldn't want it before.
Tarver was linear and undisputed when Roy fought him the third time, Toney was linear and undisputed too.
Exactly :good Maybe some people dont want to see this, but you must give credit to Vitali for trying to AVENGE a loss. Funny how Vitali would get **** if he didnt try to avenge this loss. Seems he is screwed either way
How the hell was he supposed to fight the Undisputed champion when it was HIM ****wit! How was he supposed to fight the unified champion when there was no unified champion.... until HE unified the belts?? Roy beat around 7 reigning World Champions (not counting lesser titles like the WBOgus) How many has Vitali beat?
I don't think he should say anything about it...all it does is remind us what a disgusting display of poor sportsmanship he already put on in the ring post Lewis. Losing to Lewis is no longer his greatest "victory." Destroying Sam Peter is. He should move on, or move out.
Roy lost that fight to Tarver. So Roy beat 1 legit champion in his whole career? :roflatsch That is pathetic compared to other ATG's and further proves my point.
Can't blame Vitali at all here and as a fan of his I was one of his biggest supporters and still am back when he was trying to get Lewis for a rematch. If he didn't try to avenge a loss then they will insult him day and night for it, when he tries he gets insulted too. You probably missed all the insults towards Wladimir for not fighting Purrity again or Sanders, but when Vitali tries to do it with Lewis he gets bashed on. Ridiculous if you ask me. Everyone knew that Vitali deserved a rematch and the public desperately wanted it because it was WORTH it and made sense. Right now it doesn't but back then I have no regrets for arguing with anyone that claimed otherwise and will still do.
Roy dropped his #1 spot to Tarver by losing to him and by fighting him he fought a linear undisputed champion, that's what you were asking for. James Toney was also considered the #1 at Super middleweight when Jones, who was the underdog, stepped in against him. You asked Drexl to mention ONE, I mentioned TWO. Your point is proven wrong.
Peter was nothing more than a title holder yes. And he got his ass kicked by a guy that had not fought in 4 years and was coming off several injuries. To put it in terms you can understand: Peter lost to the worst ever version of Vitali Klitschko :rofl
