Vitali did well in disposing Gomez... but does anyone else think he's slowing down?

I still dont see Haye beating Wlad. Powerful yes, but his defense is still sloppy, and Haye likes to stand and trade. Against Vitali that is just suicide. Unless Haye decides to turn into a boxing technician and stick and move for 12 rounds, he wont beat Vitali.

Going off Hayes fight with Monte Barret as a measuring stick, Vitali knocks Haye out by between 5 and 8.

 

I saw it differently. I think Gomez was trying to get inside to let his combinations go, and because Vitali failed to time his counter he'd inevitably fall through onto Gomez and hold. Hence it looked scrappy for large portions.

It would surely be very interesting to see the work-rate, footwork and ability inside of Povetkin against the old man.

 

He was performing much better vs Peter. but still as you say .. impressive win ( Dr Vooh )

 

Did you watch Povetkin vs Bryd Fight? Povetkin was having a bit difficult time with Bryd. The same Bryd that Wlad easily destroyed that ruined Bryd top contender status. Povetkin also had some problems Vs Eddie Chambers. Vitali last 2 fights were much better then Povetkin last 2 fights.

 

Povetkin is orthodox though. Easier for Vitali to hit. Povetkin is good, Vitali still will overpower him though down the stretch.

 

Nogbody has ever looked good against Gomez and nobody ever will. Styles make fights.

Vitali is getting older but we will have to wait and see what he looks like in his next fight.

Fighting a Southpaw with a good reach can make a lot of people look bad.

I thought Gomez was going to be a tougher fight....Vitali handled him but he did look a bit slower to pull the trigger...we got to remember what Gomez did to Virches and Vitali is 37 yrs old...he was good but not as sharp as he was for Kirk Johnson or Williams...but even in the Peter fight he used the left well and fired the right a little bit slower and less POP....but we can not argue with the results...Gomez was an acomplished fighter, lost only 1 fight before and was gassed up to win...his weight was also the lowest it has been.......Vitali is still a beast ( somewhat slower though)

 

Why do we just assume it was because he was southpaw? Sam Peter didn't even make an effort to come forward like Gomez did. Fat Sam was quite content to sit on the outside getting his ass peppered. He was the most static and immobile target, frankly it was difficult to not hit some part of him.

Gomez actually showed a little bit of heart, but I didn't see anything particularly special in how he came forward. A little head movement, footwork was a bit slow and he kept his hands up. The Vitali of 4/5 years ago would have timed him without problems IMO like he did Corrie Sanders. So overall I think its mostly 80% down to what Vitali has lost and maybe 20% of what Gomez did. I think Povetkin can do better, Povetkin is a more natural pressure fighter even if he is orthodox.

 

I got it Vitali age -10% Gomez style -90% - the next Vitali fight will tell.

 

I dont known. Gomez's style wasnt tailor made for Vitaly.Thats why Vitaly needed some rounds to find his range and the right distance.
You need two for a quarrel.Gomez did well in the early rounds,much better than that one-dimensional African Peter.

 

Vitali does appear (not surprisingly) to be slowing down and showing his age.

Not much time left for him.

He should try to get Valuev next, a fight he would win easily.

Then one defence of the WBA/WBC belts against a meaningful opponent, maybe Chagaev. Then retire.

 

Years ago as a young up and comer, Vitali fought a very awkward and tentative fight against a young but very experienced Larry Donald. It looked at times that both guys were just stumbling into each other and clinching. At one point Viali just seemed to punch and then push Donald to the canvas. I thought this guy is too awkward to fight real fast and heavy punching boxers like Kirk Johnson and certainly Lewis in competitive fashion. Well I was wrong. Some styles bother Vitali and guys that should be competitive with him like Sam Peter he utterly destroys. Wait till is next fight before declaring him an old war horse. He could rebound with a terrific effort and knock the next guy out with ease. This huge dude has more lives than a cat and I see him slaughtering both Valuev and the much smaller Haye. I also think he was pawing with his jab on purpose. He didn't respect Gomez's power like he did Peter's so he wanted Gomez to charge him so he could get the K.O. rather than hold Gomez at bay and beat on him for a long, boring unanimous decision victory. Finally, is anybody else sick of that ass Teddy Atlas questioning the hearts of elite pro-boxers like Vitali? He's turning into a grumpy old man with nothing good to say about the sport that made him rich and famous.

 

I thought Vitali looked much faster and sharper against Donald than he did against Gomez. Even though the Donald victory wasn't overly impressive, Vitali did at least control the fight with minimum effort and he was rarely hit.

I agree with the guy here who said that Gomez was able to get inside because Vitali's long range counters weren't sharp enough to keep the fight on the outside.
