OK, so now that Vitali didn't look good against a Kevin Johnson who was purely in surivival mode, threads sprout up claiming Vitali would lose to Haye, Tua and just about anybody with a pulse.

Remember Lewis - Akinwande? If you would judge Lewis on that fight, equally silly comments could be made about him. Lewis was a monster when someone tried to KO him, like Ruddock or Grant. He was very good against boxers who really tried to outbox him, like Holyfield. He wasn't particularly great against fighters who just tried to survive. Likewise, Vitali doesn't have the style to chase an extremely defensive fighter and his height is a disadvantage when the other guy just wants to survive. Just as Wlad's height was a disadvantage against the extremely timid Ibragimov. I feel that Eddie Chambers would look better against Johnson or Ibragimov than the Klitschko brothers, which doesn't mean he would beat either brother.

People make a huge fuss about Wladimir looking bad against Ibragimov and Vitali against Johnson, ALL fighters had their share of similar experiences. Ali had his boring fights, Leonard, Tyson(yes even him), Lewis(a very very long list), Holyfield, Foreman and ALL fighters.

I find it hilarious that his second ever opponent lasts the distance and everyone cries for his retirement. What about Lewis - Mavrovic? Does that mean Lewis has got no power?

I agree completely with your post and I'm very glad you made it. But, that said, I do think Vitali's skin is giving out. He was barely touched and I was seeing him mark up. I didn't like that. May've been insignificant but I notice a few days before the fight it looked like he had a slight shiner under one eye that seemed to have gone away. That happens, of course, but if somebody was landing, trying to and doing it, it looked like they would've really messed his face up regardless of whether or not they rocked him.

Not to sound like a smart arse but how exactly does skin "give out"? Even if this phenomena is tangible does it even make much difference?

Right. Johnson is defensive and takes a good punch. And why judge a 38 year old who looked like he hurt something during the fight? Vitali did not land clean enough on Johnson.

Missing most of his shots, unable to cut the ring off, not taking risks against an opponent who offered nothing in response...

As I said last night, Kevin Johnson is sincerely not fit to polish Henry Akinwande's boots.

Akinwande has beaten fighters, achieved things and competed at a level Johnson has never been close to.

Trying to compare the two is like trying to compare prime Mike Tyson to Chris Arreola. It does not fit.

How is a fighter who is constantly getting close to clinch and tie up your arms anything like a fighter who spends the whole fight slipping punches?

Lewis - Akinwande was nothing like this fight.

A better analogy is Wlad vs Byrd II. THAT is how you deal with someone trying to slip your shots. :deal

Byrd abandoned his safety - first style in the rematch with Wlad, that was his plan and he said afterwards it was stupid. Akinwande - Lewis was similar insofar that Akinwande never tried to win the fight, just like Johnson. Whatever a fighter does to just survive doesn't matter so much. Johnsons ducked and turned so low, his head was often on one level with Vitali's trunk line. How is a 6'8 guy going to land punches on that?

he was cutting the ring very well! there's no way that Johnson could have run anywhere than in the ropes... what he didn't do that well is to position Johnson for the right he had cocked all the time.

agreed. But in fairness to Lewis (who i'm not much of a fan of) he did all he could. Mavrovic is just a tough, tough mother****er with an epic chin. Him and George Chuvalo, it's something in that Croatian blood, amazing chins.

As you get older your skin loses it's flexability and gets thinner. Trust me, dang it, I know. Takes it longer to heal too.
