Not even the best heavyweight in his own family, so how does he manage to crack your top 10 bare in mind Wlad doesn't? Wlad is superior in all departments to Vitali. Ability, H2H, resumé and achievement.

    Of course....

But then I dont need to write homo erotic threads to prove Lewis was better than Vitali.

    You saw the fight!

I'd probably like the Klits a lot more if it wasn't for some of their fans trying to batter me over the head with the argument they are top ten ATGs. Sorry, but that is complete tosh.

They have been the best two heavyweights since Lewis retired without question but considering the competition, that's not an ATG accomplishment.

I think its because he's never beaten a great HW.

or even a very good one.

that being said, I still consider Vitali a great HW.

In these "ATG rankings" what I don't understand is why does a loss against a bum make one a bum?

In Tennis, Formula 1, Chess we accept that a #1 ranked player/driver/grandmaster can lose to a nobody every once in a while. It's a fluke, a random event. Like a summer rain shower.

Like any sport there's an element of chance in the outcome of any match. In boxing however, we immediately classify a loss to a nobody as a terribly disaster and write off the loser as "shot" and "done". Lewis may have lost to two bums in Rahman and McCall (who apart from beating Lewis were unable to put together anything close to an impressive career) but Lewis IMO would still wipe the floor H2H with Ali, Frazier, Foreman, Louis etc. etc.

That's why I am highly critical of these ATG rankings in the traditional sense. The effect of randomness is not considered highly enough.

Look at what McCall and Rahman have achieved in their careers apart from getting a lucky shot on Lewis' chin. Nothing. Nada. Nothing that people will remember them for.

Why? Because neither men won any of their important fights from thereon. Whenever it counted they weren't able to perform. Why? Because a lucky shot isn't easy to reproduce on a regular basis. They got lucky against Lewis that's about it.

Their lack of consistency in their performance inside the ring, lack of professional attitude (and a drug addiction in McCall's case) and zero wins against top competition apart from winning against Lewis make them candidates for ridicule.

Maybe "bum" is too harsh a word, let's say very mediocre contenders.

I think we boxing fans are at fault here. "Should have crushed" works on paper but not in the boxing ring. We expect our champs to crush nobodies but chance always plays a role.

Our expectations for "0 loss" records and "an ATG can't lose to a nobody" are way off IMO. We are the ones to be blamed, not the champs who get floored by nobodies.

I agreed that they didn't have great careers apart from the Lewis win but bum is not just a maybe on too harsh, mate. McCall's a damn fringe contender in his forties, lackluster era even considered, that makes him far from a bum. McCall has very good ingredients. He's a decently skilled fighter with a good punch and a tremendous chin who I've not seen showing up in nearly as bad a shape as a lot of his younger division mates of this era who are touted prospects at that.

Stoppage victories over Akinwande, Lewis, Maskaev, Damiani and Seldon, although not all the circumstances were impressive, does not make a bum career. At all. Rahman is surely not a bum either although more lacking than McCall still has a draw with Toney and Tua and a knockout over Sanders apart from the great Lewis win. Similarly, he has pretty good skills at his best, and is very, very strong. These guys are absolutely not bums. Not really even close. They're both very solid. There's a lot of area between great and bum for SNV's sake.
