This is a very odd post. You believe that Vitali doesn’t get the deserved recognition because he is still active and yet he was retired for almost 4 years before his relatively recent comeback. During his hiatus, I don’t remember too much of an argument being put up for him being an All-Time Great Heavyweight and I haven’t seen anything thing in his last few comeback bouts that will change that. Additionally, Tyson, Lewis and Holyfield were all being talked about in those terms while they were still active and so your “belief” such as it is, sits on a shaky foundation from the outset.

I also have to chuckle at the fact that you install Vitali at number 7 on your personal ATG list and then list 6 other Heavyweights that you have no doubt are greater, suggesting that these are the only Heavyweights you believe to be better than Vitali – fair enough. However, the 6 you mention are just the ‘tip of the iceberg’ of great Heavyweights. I have mentioned two others already.

I doubt that any reasonable argument can be made for, Vitali Klitschko being anything other than an average Heavyweight, at best, when discussing him in terms of All-Time Greatness . He and his brother dominate one of, if not the worst periods in Heavyweight Boxing history, in terms of talented Fighters. His greatest bout came against an old, out-of-condition, blasé Lewis and Vitali couldn’t even win that. Had he been around earlier, say the late 80’s through the 90’s, Vitali would most likely have been an ‘also-ran’ and his name long forgotten by now.

    Indeed!

I often hear the comment that Lewis was never appreciated until after his retirement. I don't remember it like that at all.
It always seemed to be American fight fans who were reluctant to recognise his significance but maybe thats because he was the first non-American heavyweight champ for a long time.

This era of Klitschko domination is thought of as being one of (if not the) worst eras in heavyweight history. That being the case, its only a matter of time before another Lewis/ Tyson/ Ali comes along and puts the Klitschko brothers in the shade.

In future I don't see Vitali being remembered any more kindly than he is thought of today.

At present, if you're really, really hungry, even a water biscuit tastes delicious.

Yeah, I'm American and I pretty much remember it being just that way here, with Lewis not getting the credit he has now until he was gone and we were left without a real dominant champ for a while. Then I would hear things like "We didn't know what he had until it was gone." Really no matter how much you may dislike the guy on top, it's at least nice to have a definitive top guy, even in this era. But you don't realize it until everything is thrown into a question mark.

    Errrrrr. A prime Mike Tyson?

By the way, if you're going to represent each fighter by their losses, all these guys would look great against Vitali Klitschko: who gave up against Chris Byrd and got his face cut to shreds against an old Lennox Lewis.

With his Iron Chin, Height, and awkward lean back style Dr. Vitali Klitschko would be a tough out for any Heavyweight in History.

    We'll see, probably not.

Here's where you completely **** up and show your true nuthugging of Vitali. His resume is among the worst of past champions and his greatest accomplishment is losing to an old Lewis.

He's not that good, sure his measureables are awesome but he's never proven his power against top competition and he's not that fast. He's a very poor man's Ali with his style of fighting.

He is dull and he is boring. It took him 10 rounds to take out Sosnowski who is a complete bum.

No he shouldn't. His resume and accomplishments are not 1/20th as much as those guys above.

Ali would outbox him thouroughly as would Holmes. Liston would bully him around the ring and Louis would pick him apart. I'd pick Jack Johnson over him as well, he is superior in defensive ability and is far smarter than Vitali in the ring. I believe Tyson would win a very comfortable decision and possibly stop him late, and that's being kind.

Hooray. Wladimir is better than Vitali in every way. He's accomplished far more already than his big brother.

Well, so Lewis had two off nights (McCall & Rahman) in his career.... But he avenged them KO losses with KO wins....... That is what Hall of Famers do....... Lenny Lewis makes my top-10 pretty easily......

V.K. never got his chance to avenge his "Technical" losses to Byrd and Lewis...... Neither dude was interested in a return bout with V.K.

    Can you blame them?

Whether or not Lewis got the 6th round TKO win over V.K. back in 2003 it will still stand as a win for Lewis, but I had Klit ahead by a **** hair at the time of the stoppage on cuts.....

I can't recall ever seeing V.K. lose more than two consectitive rds at a time in a fight... That's pretty impressive to me.......
