Louis said a lot of things.

But using that quote it was one before the Walcott match. Louis said he felt great for the re-match. As the years passed perhaps Louis was using this as an excuse for his performance vs Walcott. A better conclusion was Walcott was just much better than the typical Louis opponent and Louis had issues with fighters with quick feet.

I want to focus on this part and see if anyone who thinks Joe would defeat Vitali here or was the greatest can explain the below. Today Joshua gets his share of critics for not beating Takam sooner, but I bet if he fought the same Louis fought he's either undefeated or looses one, and requires less round than Louis did, goes down less, and wins easier.

I also think Vitali beats the below easier and likely goes undefeated without being floored multiple times as Louis was.

Tommy Farr. Likely won 6 rounds off Joe Louis and though not a puncher stunned him.

Mann - Gutsy, though out gunned.

Harry Thomas? WHO? Unranked. 40-11-2. Would not get a title shot today, not even vs Wilder.

Schemling. Ko'd Louis. Note how Schmeling who was thought to be past his best landed with ease

John Henry Louis - Had bad vision problems, Louis gave him a pay day. Unranked at heavyweight

Jack Roper - 61-39 -11. Not ranked, and not worthy. Would not get a title shot today.

Tony Galento - Short, and Fat with power, he floored Joe Louis.

Bob Pastor - Made Louis look bad in the first fight, lost the title fight in 11 rounds.

Arturo Godoy- I double dare anyone to score the available footage, this could have been a bad decision! Godoy out landed, pushed Louis around the ring, and had him befuddled with a low crouch. I do think you can make a case that Godoy was a top all time 125 heavyweight, and likely the 2nd best man listed...and look at how bad he made Louis look!

    • The United Press scored the fight even, giving each fighter five rounds and calling five even.
    Post-Fight Quotes
    • Joe Louis: "This was the worst fight I ever had."
    • Arturo Godoy: "Of course, I think I win. Certainly, I should get no worse than draw."

Johnny Paycheck- Epic KO, not like Paycheck was any good though.

Al McCoy - WHO? Already lost 30 times and drew 20 times. Hurt Joe Louis in the 5th. Would not get a title shot today.

Threads like this should always have a poll. It's like buying an ice cream and only receiving the cone.

I think it's fair to say plenty on here wear rose tinted spectacles, no doubt Louis looks great on film but fighting terrible boxers will make anyone look decent. If he were around today he'd be lucky to earn a belt no matter what weight division he fought in.

    JT,

Care to reply to post #77 by me? Louis was a skilled puncher in a land of few, but like I said his opponents were pretty weak, yet they floored him, took way too many rounds from an ATG, stunned him, etc..

The best two Louis fought that I listed were Schmeling who beat him, and Godoy who had bad judging, and could have achieved a draw or gasp victory based on the footage.

Then he's floored by a short fat man in Galento, lost 6 rounds to Tommy Farr, and was stunned by a no name in Al McCoy. A reaction if some are honest should be holy cow, I did not know that, and I doubt the same would happen to Vitali.

All of these fights happened in Louis prime.

Because fans are based I prefer to debate, polls can be popularity contests.

I like Vitali and respect the way he used his size and skills .. his chin was terrific .. that being said he would be beat up by Louis who was way too fast and murderous punching .... for all his KO victories I never saw Vitali as such a huge puncher ( not close to Lewis or his own brother) and don't like Louis as a match up for him at all ..

Larry Holmes opponents were pretty weak, yet they floored him, took away too many rounds from an ATG, stunned him etc..

    How do you rate Holmes?

    I can't be arsed replying properly, drinking beer, however;

Why do you love Vitali this much? You get almost lovingly defensive about him.

As janitor already pointed out, questioning standard of opposition is a bizarre route to go down when you are apparently using it to strengthen Vitali's case - a fighter with a laughable record.

    Just wondering.

    Kiss kiss.

Yeah, I can't say that Vitali opposition was better than Louis, just bigger and many due to being fat. We can all agree that Farr likely was better than Arrieola.

All good but polls show us exactly where the forum stands on match ups and issues.

He lost few rounds in comparison to Louis and was floored less and struggled a lot less vs his tier two title people. Bum of the month guys had their share of moments vs Louis.

    Switching the topic already JT?

Who outboxed Holmes in his prime? No one.

Sober up and reply later. I’m saying with weak opposition Louis should have looked much better realitive to the praise people give him. Most of his opponents would not be in the top ten today at heavyweight. Most people have not studied his films the way I have and aren’t familiar with his struggles in victory.

Let’s say for the moment that Vitali did not have good opposition either meaning that common ground is agreed upon. Deal?

Why did Vitali utterly dominated his, winning almost all rounds and stopping them without being floored, while Louis lost many rounds was floored, and stunned much more often?

A honest and logical response to that is what I seek. So after a good breakfast and some fresh air reply back to my question if you don’t mind.
