This is absolutely the case. In addition: There were reports from his training camp that he set personal lifting and running records during his preparation and he was planning on sticking around longer. Lewis wanted another easy payday at the expense of a faded Tyson but when a real challenger emerged,, Lewis showed his true colors

Depends on your definition of "big sized" and "real skill".

    Vitali. (W TKO 6)
    Golota (KO 1)
    Bruno (TKO 7)
    Tony Tucker (UD 12)

    Big, average skills?

    Grant (W KO 2)

    Briggs or Akinwande count?

Akinwande maybe, Briggs not so much.

Or is this just another way to slip Holyfield into the conversation, via his losing series with Bowe?

Your argument is kind of flawed because firstly, Lewis beat one of the Klitchkos already, and the other was being lined up to fight Lewis but got flattened by Corrie Sanders.

Also, Tyson had already signed for a rematch. The agreement for a Lewis Tyson rematch was made before the first fight, and was done so both guys could make a tonne of money out of it.

Lewis was 37 by the time he fought Vitali. Are you suggested he hung around until his early 40's so that he could fight both of them?

He would have been 38 by the time he fought Vitaly AGAIN, and probably 40 by the time Wlad had worked his way back to the top.

Just how long are guys supposed to fight for? Until one of the brothers beats them, to help their careers?

    Tucker, Ruddock, Morrison, Mavrovic, Golota.

Correction. They only stepped up during the tail end of Lewis' time. Lewis was 38 years old.

Aside from Vitali, Tucker is the best tall heavyweight that Lewis ever faced.....and even Tucker falls well short of the caliber fighter Vitali and Wlad have become.

.....and no, I'm not suggesting Lewis have waited for Wlad to get back on track after his KO loss to Sanders, but I am suggesting he chickened out of a Vitali fight when he had publicly said he would grant Vitali that.

Lewis gave himself a ton of praise after that Vitali cuts stoppage, promises he'd rematch him, and then does'nt.

.....and yes, there was an agreement for two fights with Tyson beforehand......but please, said agreements are followed up when the first fight has been competitive, and only then its the loser of the fight that forces the rematch........
This was an embarrasing case of Lewis trying to force a fighter he had completely dominated and disposed of in easy fashion, to rematch him even though Tyson had publicly stated he had had enough of boxing and did not want to continue.

There is just absolutely no way to defend Lewis in his case of trying to force Tyson who he had dominated and knocked out in brutal fashion, to get back in the ring with that same fighter.
I dont believe any fighter in history has ever tried to force a fighter he had already dominated in the ring to fight him again.:-(

Mavrovich & Golota rank in the same class as Sosnowski (the nobody class) you know that right? To call them "heavyweights with real skill" is quite a stretch.

    Just that simple.

The fact that Lewis had tried to force Mike Tyson back into the ring, just makes him copping out of a Vitali rematch that much worse.

LOL you *******.............you ain't got a clue

Tucker was a recycled recovering coke addict when lewis faced him courtesy of Donny King

Rudddock had the living **** beat out of him by a faded Tyson and got some broken ribs and jaw as a present.

Morrison ? LOL, Tommy Chin beat a ancient Foreman besides that he got waxed EVERY time he even remotely stepped up.

The Mohawk guy ? Straight out ham and egger. Fact.

Golata ? Another total bum who made his entire reputation of LOOSING two fights with a washed up Bowe.

There you have have.it..............SHOW me on top ranked dangerous tall fighter Lemmie EVER manhandled...........Grant ? lol, talentless HBO hype job...........when Tyson fought a old Holmes he knocked him the F out..........when Lemmie fought Oldiefield he walzed for a boring 24 round snoozefest

He is also the ONLY Heavyweight champ in history who not only got clod cocked by ONE shot not only once but twice by borderline yourneyman. Fact.

Funny thing, Lemmie actively, when VK called him out, pursued a shell of a shell Tyson rematch and was all gung ho to face Jones, lol, I guess he was not old ,washed up, fat or disinterested for those two but he sure pulled his tail between his legs when the , according to all the experts in this thread, talentless and robotic VK wanted to fight him again.

Funny X 2 when he got laid out cold he sued for rematches but when the shoe was on the other foot he ran for the hills..........

Vitali broke Lewis' nose and did send him into retirement. Vitali tried to get Lewis back into a ring, but Lewis retired and refused a huge amount of money.

Vitaly blew it, he couldn´t beat an old and out of shape Lewis, no need for a rematch.

More like Krispy Kreme sent Lewis into retirement. He was fat and old at that point and he still put a beating on Vitali.

i personally DO believe Lennox retired because of the pressure to accept a Vitali Rematch. I rememebr Lewis trying to sue tyson into a rematch after the Vitali fight and the VERY NEXT DAY after Vitali was made a Mandatory to Lewis WBC belt he retired, just seems like a very convenient retirement.

That is only an indication but certainly not a factl. The only fact is Lewis TKO Vitali.

And besides, Briggs, Mercer and Holyfield did great against younger Lewis too, yet Vitali seems to get more praise for giving an older Lewis problems, that goes to shadow that Vitali's effort has really become overrated over time.
